Milford Man Taken to Hospital From Casey Pool with Heat Exhaustion

Firefighters urge residents to stay hydrated and out of the heat this weekend.

A middle-aged man suffered heat exhaustion while visiting Sen. P. Eugene Casey Memorial Pool on Saturday, where temperatures remained in the 90s through the afternoon.

The man had fainted at one point, and was taken to Milford Regional Medical Center by EMTs for treatment. Police and firefighters were dispatched about 4 p.m. Saturday. The man, described as being 45 to 55, was experiencing heat exhaustion, according to the Milford police log.

Firefighters urge people to try to stay in air conditioned settings, and out of the sun, when the region is experiencing hot, humid conditions as it has the past several days. Temperatures on Sunday are expected to cool somewhat, compared to Friday and Saturday, but will remain in the low 90s, according to the National Weather Service.

The best way to avoid heat related sickness is to stay out of the hot sun and heat and make sure to hydrate by ingesting enough fluids, said Milford firefighter JP Vignone.

"Staying hydrated is a big one," he said.

Some people will know they are hot, but may not realize or recognize that heat illness is starting to affect them, he said.

Heat illnesses, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, include heat exhaustion — which has symptoms including clammy skin, weakness, excessive sweating, fainting or nausea — as well as heat stroke.

Heat stroke, which is more serious, is a body temperature of 103 or higher, the person has hot, red or dry to moist skin, and may lose consciousness. This is a medical emergency requiring a call to 911.
