Frozen Yogurt Shop Opening in Milford

Yum Yum Froyo, a business started by three friends, will open in April on East Main Street.

Milford has plenty of businesses, but not one that sells frozen yogurt as its specialty.

Tuan Lam and his business partners, Derek and Lindsey Tran, noticed this when they started scouting out locations in the region for a frozen yogurt shop.

Frozen yogurt has been around for several decades, but it's enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, spurred by people trying to eat more healthy alternatives to ice cream. Shops in Franklin, Holliston and surrounding towns sell the creamy, low- to non-fat treat.

Now Milford will get its own: Yum Yum Froyo.

"There is a demand around here," Lam said.

Yum Yum will not reinvent the wheel. It's going to feature the self-service stations that are popular in other shops, Lam said. But it's not going to stay the same after it opens, either, he said.

The partners plan to make changes as needed, rotating in seasonal fruit toppings, and making sure its offerings stay current.

Right now, the plan is for 10 base flavors to start, and 50 toppings. Some of the toppings will include favorites like nuts, fresh fruits and gummy bears. More unusual items will include Bo-Bu flavor balls.

The customer will pay by the ounce, with the average cup going for about $5, Lam said.

The shop is located at 196 East Main Street, in the Quarry Plaza, in the space that formerly housed H&R Block. Lam and his partners are now remodeling the interior spaces. When the shop is finished, it will include four tables and a breakfast-style bar facing the windows. Yum Yum Froyo also will have free wireless service and TVs.

It will be open seven days a week, all year round.

The plan is to open in mid- to late-April, giving the owners some time to perfect the service before the peak summer season begins.

Lam, 30, and Tran, 36, are friends who have talked about opening a business for at least a few years, Lam said. This is their first effort as restaurateurs. Lam has a background in auto repair. Tran has a business background.

"I'm as excited as I am nervous," Lam said. "This has been an idea for the last couple of years."
