Following parental complaints, bottled water that was removed from Milford public schools this week will be reinstalled, until individual schools are tested for a water contaminant.
Bottled water pulled from Milford schools? Not so fast. After a parent complained, bottled water will be reintroduced to the schools, until individual schools are tested for a contaminant in Milford Water Company water. The Poland Spring bottled water dispensers were placed in schools in October, and removed Tuesday, after a series of test results around town indicated the presence of a contaminant in the town water had dropped to a level considered acceptable by environmental authorities. The town was not required to introduce the bottled water, but did so out of concern for parents who were worried about the water. News that the bottled water was on the way out spread fast. A parent complained to a School Committee member, who called …

The Milford Water Company has received notification from state officials that its water no longer exceeds the permissible level for a contaminant. It is the first time in a year the water has met state and federal standards for Total Trihalomethanes.
UPDATED: For the first time in a year, all Milford Water Company testing locations in Milford are in compliance with a state and federal mandate for a contaminant that has alarmed many customers. The private utility company received notice Wednesday from the state Department of Environmental Protection that its running annual average for Total Trihalomethanes is 80 ppb, the threshold for compliance. The quarterly average for October through December was 62 ppb. The town's five test locations revealed the following results on Dec. 23: Water customers will receive a notification of the new status. The company in October installed two carbon filters at its Dilla Street water treatment property, which are designed to pull organic materials …

Bottled water that has been a fixture in Milford public schools since October will be removed Tuesday, following a round of quarterly tests that revealed a contaminant in Milford Water Company water has decreased to an acceptable level.
Poland Spring will pull its bottled water coolers from Milford public schools Tuesday, after quarterly test results revealed Milford Water Company water is no longer violating federal or state standards for a contaminant linked to cancer. The coolers of bottled water had been installed in the schools in October, after elevated levels of Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) in the Milford water had alarmed many parents. At that time, public officials, including Superintendent Robert Tremblay, said it was a precautionary step, and that the bottled water would be removed once the elevated levels came down to an acceptable amount. The contaminants — called Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) — are produced when drinking water is disinfected. They form when…

Initial sample results indicate the carbon filter at the Milford Water Company is pulling out natural materials, so the water needs less chlorine.
So far, so good. Initial samples pulled from a well on the Milford Water Company site show the carbon sandwich filter installed in October is pulling natural materials out of the water supply, as hoped, according to the company's general manager. David Condrey, the Water Company general manager, said the demand for chlorine to sanitize the water supply has dropped dramatically, as a result. "The organic reduction we're seeing coming out of that one filter is great," Condrey said Tuesday. The company installed the carbon filter, between two layers of sand, to pull natural materials from groundwater sources. A second carbon filter will be installed early in 2011. The purpose of the $280,000 filter is to reduce a contaminant that has been …

The first two layers of a three-layer carbon filter, called a carbon sandwich, are nearly complete at the Milford Water Company.
A soft, six-inch layer of granulated carbon is being smoothed out over an existing base of sand, the makings of a "carbon sandwich" that Milford Water Company officials hope will resolve ongoing problems with a water contaminant. The carbon sandwich — a base of 21 to 24 inches of sand, followed by six inches of carbon, topped with eight to 12 inches of sand — will replace what is now known as Filter #3 at the company site. The carbon filter being installed this week cost $280,000, said David Condrey, general manager of the private utility company. By the end of October, Condrey said he hopes to have the system online. It will work simply: water drawn through underground pipes from Echo Lake in Hopkinton will be pumped onto the top layer of…

About 100 Milford residents attended a grassroots-organized information session on Milford water Thursday, which featured public officials, as well as a water expert, who discussed the state of drinking water in town.
The notice from the Milford Water Company, which, among other things, advised customers to open their windows to ventilate their bathrooms when using the shower to avoid airborne exposure to a water contaminant, was the tipping point for Lisa Vasile. Vasile, a nurse-practitioner, was among the residents who organized a citizens' meeting on water concerns Thursday. The idea, she said, was sparked when she and her friends realized many other town residents were throwing away these notices, or not getting them at all. The notices only go to the Water Company customers. If tenants don't pay the water bill, they won't get the notices. The information meeting on water issues organized by Vasile and Colleen Annantuonio, among others, drew about …
