Water Co. Plans Summer Pipe Repair

The brown water experienced by Milford Water Company customers this week was due, in part, to rerouting around a section of leaking pipe that still has to be replaced. The Water Company manager said that repair should happen later this summer.

The rerouting of water to avoid a broken line near Dilla Street, underneath the Charles River, was partially responsible for the brown water experienced by Milford Water Company customers this week, the utility manager acknowledged Tuesday. The repair of that water line, which broke this winter, will hopefully take place in August, said David Condrey, general manager for the Milford Water Company. The utility is scheduled to appear Aug. 3 before the Milford Conservation Commission, which would need to authorize the work because of its proximity to the river, Condrey said. If approved, the repair would begin a few weeks later, he said. The job will be problemmatic, because the pipe goes under the river, near where the small bridge carries …

Brown Water in Milford

A spike in water use this week has led to water discoloration across Milford. The Milford Water Company said consumption is up almost 1 million gallons a day.

A sharp uptick in water consumption has produced widespread water discoloration in Milford. The sudden increase in use has spurred the Milford Water Company, a private utility, to consider strengthening outdoor watering restrictions. The brown water flowing out of taps since Wednesday has angered many customers of the Water Company, who are calling elected officials and the private utility company in frustration. A Water Company manager said consumption is the root of the problem. Water use over the past two days is up nearly 1 million gallons a day, compared to typical use. The heat, people being on vacation and at home, people watering their lawns and filling pools — despite outdoor watering restrictions — all are factors in the spike in…
