Photo of the Day

Enjoying Valentine's Day

Eleanor Pupa, 90, got into the spirit of Valentine's Day at the Milford Senior Center Tuesday.

In a Valentine's Day tea, at the Milford Senior Center, Eleanor Pupa drew the most outrageous fan — a red feathered creation that she agreed to pose with for a photograph. About 60 women gathered at the center Tuesday for the tea, which included a performer in 1908 period dress, who explained how fans were used to communicate in courtships of the Victorian era.

The Milford Senior Center prepared a Valentine's Day tea, which drew about 60 women who enjoyed tea and sandwiches, and who learned about courtship in the 1890s.

The Milford Senior Center isn't normally associated with romance, but courtship and how to express love were in the air on Tuesday. The center invited Rita Parisi, a performer with Waterfall Productions in Amesbury, who wore period dress from 1908 and explaied how a woman would have been courted by a suitor in the 1890s. She also explained how a young woman held a fan, and used it, sent signals to her suitors.
