For nearly a week, Patch readers have been uploading photos. We've crowned our winner.
In our photo contest this week, readers from all over the region shared with us photos that illustrate Thanksgiving. But we could only choose one. All photos uploaded before 6 p.m. yesterday were under consideration to be crowned the winner in Patch's Picture of the Week Contest. After deliberating, we had to go with Nicole McKay's photo, as shown above. Congratulations, Nicole, and thank you to all those who participated! Please continue to share your photos with us, either through our blogging platform or by uploading to your local Patch site's Pics and Clips gallery. Nicole, we'll be emailing you so we can make arrangements to get you your $25 gift card. Return to Patch tomorrow, when you can start uploading pictures for our next …

In the annual Thanksgiving Day matchup, the Shrewsbury Colonials shut out the Milford Scarlet Hawks.
Milford High School hosted the Shrewsbury Colonials Thanksgiving morning, in Milford's last home game of the season. The Scarlet Hawks finish their season 2-9, shy of making it to the playoffs. As forecasted, the weather for the game was perfect, especially considering many Turkey Day games have been played with snow on the sidelines. Shrewsbury's Zach Dionis scored the Colonials' first and second touchdowns and Jay Reynolds scored their third. Shrewsbury also scored a field goal, defeating Milford 24-0 and bringing their record to 9-2.

I'll start us off: I grew up in an Irish family with a mother who didn't like to cook, and who viewed most herbs and seasonings with suspicion. Beyond salt, pepper, and butter, what more do we need? But she loved cooking at the holidays, when scattered family members came home. And usually, for us, her holiday baking meant Irish soda bread. I didn't like it as a kid. But it grew on me. About 10 years ago, I wrote a feature story for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Irish soda bread, and other Irish recipes, and used my …
Thanksgiving isn't a day, it's a life.
I was raised by a mother who is a proficient Thank-You-Card-Writer. My Aunt is the Queen of the Thank-You-Card-Writers-Club. Each letter is like a tiny novella. Hand-written. Specifically personal. However, in my defense, I’m excellent at the verbal “thank you." I use it early and often. And when I say it, it is because I am truly thankful, truly moved. I am of the belief that really being thankful means just as much whether it’s formally written or graciously said. The form is less important than the intent. I know this makes me a high-risk …
