Assisted Living Center Proposed for Site of Former Orchard

What once was an apple orchard, at Birch Street and Medway Road, could become a 90-unit assisted living facility. The Milford Planning Board will hold a public hearing Tuesday night.

A New Hampshire development company wants to build a 90-unit assisted living facility on a 5-acre site at the corner of Birch Street and Medway Road. The development, called "Cornerstone," is before the Milford Planning Board Tuesday for a public hearing, and a possible vote. The hearing begins at 7:05 p.m. at Town Hall. The proposal would develop a now largely-vacant parcel, which used to be an apple orchard. SPL Development Group, of Amherst, NH, wants to build a one- and two-story structure in a series of wings. A parking area of 60 spaces also is included. The proposed 66,726-square-foot assisted living facility would include a 25-bed alzheimer unit, said Town Planner Larry Dunkin. Access would be off Birch Street. A fire lane would …

Mixed Feelings on Walden Woods-Milford Trail Proposal

Milford residents had differing opinions Tuesday about whether completion of the Milford Upper Charles Trail, in exchange for dropping an age restriction on Walden Woods, is a good idea.

Is it a good deal for Milford to remove an age restriction on the condo development at Walden Woods, for completion of the Milford Upper Charles Trail? It depends who is asked. The proposed swap — of the over-55 limitation for condo sales for the completed one-mile segment — drew a mixed reaction from residents attending the Planning Board public hearing Tuesday. The developer of Walden Woods, a 300-acre condominium community, is seeking town permission to lift the age restriction on the sale of 41 of its 165 units. Instead of creating new playing fields for Milford children — the original plan to provide for a "substantial" recreational facility as required in its 1995 approval — the developer now wants to complete the missing segment in …

Hi Bill, the 41 units referenced in the article are the only ones that are subject to the over-55 restriction. All of the other units in that development already are unrestricted. The age restriction was applied to the 41 units so the developer could build more units than normally would have been allowed, what they're calling a "density bonus."   more ›

Annual Town Meeting 2011

Main Street, Top-Floor Apartments Put on Hold

After hearing criticism about a proposal for Main Street apartments, the Planning Board voted Tuesday to pull the question from Annual Town Meeting.

After hearing criticism for weeks, the Milford Planning Board voted Tuesday to pull a proposal from Annual Town Meeting that would have asked voters to allow more apartments on Main Street. The proposal, placed on the warrant by the Planning Board, would have allowed a handful of property owners to develop top-floor apartments in their buildings, as long as the new units were on the third floor or higher. Apartments would have been capped at two bedrooms, and only two apartments on the top floor would have been allowed in each structure. A total of eight buildings facing Main Street were affected by the article. Voters shot down a similar proposal in 2009. And Planning Board members said Tuesday they worried the same thing might happen …

Can someone tell me why this is a bad idea ? In my very small and limited mind it seems like a fine idea, I can't imagine it could make it worse in that area of town, seems like a goofy thing to be squabbling about. I would think the planning board would have bigger fish to fry .   more ›
