5 Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 18

A Milford High School senior has received two letters of nomination to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations. 1. Michael Shea, a senior at Milford High School, has been nominated by both former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown and U.S. Rep. Richard Neal to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. The nomination is a critical step in the process of gaining admission to the service academy, and it is unusual for a student to gain two letters. In his letter, Brown said he had received several hundred requests, but could only grant a few nominations. 5 Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 17

Teens and pre-teens: get your costume designs in order. The Milford Youth Center's dance on Oct. 26 will feature a costume contest.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations. 1. The Milford Youth Center, which provides supervised activities for kids in town in elementary, middle and into high school, is hosting a party on Friday, Oct. 26 with a theme every kid will love: Haunted Halloween. The dance will include a DJ, a costume contest and pumpkin painting. Proceeds from the $3 entry fee will go to purchase turkeys for Thanksgiving for needy families.
