Milford Selectmen Question Process for Reviewing Casino

One selectman said he was not aware that the town's consultants would not be performing from-scratch, independent reports on water and transportation impacts. Another said the public meeting June 3 did little to help him evaluate the proposal.

Milford selectmen expressed disappointment Monday in aspects of the process for reviewing the Foxwoods Massachusetts casino application, particularly chairman William Buckley, who said he was not aware that the town's consultants would not be conducting their own studies of impacts including traffic and water consumption. The consultants hired on behalf of the town by attorneys Shefsky & Froelich instead will conduct what is called peer-review analyses, meaning they will be independently verifying data that is provided by consultants hired by the developer. And the water impact report will be based on a model established by the Milford Water Company, an independent utility that has had a strained relationsip with the town, over water rates…

Just as a note, I received a complaint that a comment kept getting "rejected" by Patch. I am not rejecting comments. Something went wrong and many comments, on various stories, by various posters, have been swept into a rejected filter. It isn't the poster or the content. I'm restoring them and will let the engineers know. Sorry and thanks for your patience.   more ›

It's a town website. It would be maintained by the same person who runs the existing town website. If it has useful information, why would this be an issue? People can see the correspondence/reports themselves now, instead of relying on media, not that we're not wonderful and all....   more ›

Developers: 92 Percent of Casino Traffic Will Come from Route 495

Last night Scott Butera and other Foxwoods Massachusetts team members presented their plans to the Milford Selectmen.

For the first time since the casino process started, Milford Selectmen and residents got solid numbers and answers from the developers. Primarily among the numbers was the number 92. Scott Butera and other team members working on Foxwoods Massachusetts say that based on their traffic studies, 92 percent of the vehicles headed to the casino would be coming from the north or south on Route 495. To mitigate this problem, developers have proposed adding collection and distribution lanes to the highway, similar to what a driver experiences on Route 495 in Mansfield near the Comcast Center exits. The two extra lanes of travel would be added in each direction, creating one exit from the main highway that would funnel people to exits 19 and 20 in …

You are right. Casinos are designed to keep people in - no windows, clocks, etc. Local business will not benefits, and again you're right, what is there to see here? The only traffic concern I have is on Rte 495. It is very loud and if you travel it, know it is crowded and not getting better. Many in Milford has been trying to get sound barriers, but we keep sliding down the list.   more ›

Foxwoods MA Casino Presentation Tonight at Milford High

The casino developer's will be revealing their plans tonight at 7:00.

As the planning and permitting process continues for casino proposals across the state, Milford Selectmen and community members will be getting their first detailed look at the plans for Foxwoods, MA tonight. The developers are expected to present their plans for the architectural design of the casino along with discussion of some mitigation for the impacts of the new development in town. "I think what people are going to see tonight is really revolutionary in terms of thought process and design; it’s really going to look like a New England style resort," Scott Butera, CEO of Foxwoods Resort Casino, said in a phone interview. Butera has already discussed the 3,000 new jobs that will be created by Foxwoods MA, making it the second largest …

Carl, if there is no redeeming value to a casino, they why are there a slew of them all over this country? I find it hard to believe that all these communities will allow a casino when there is no benefit to them at all. That would make all these communities a glutton for punishment. I do believe there is a good thing about casinos with its revenue but I want to know how much. I want to know how …   more ›

Memorial Day Parade Scheduled, Watertown Police Invited

Milford Selectmen will ask the Watertown Police if they want to participate in this month's Memorial Day parade.

The annual tradition of the Memorial Day Parade in Milford may have a new addition this year. Milford Selectmen will ask the Watertown Police if they want to send an honor guard delegation to participate in the parade this year, given the role that the department's officers played in stopping two men accused in the Boston Marathon bombing. One suspect was killed in a shootout with Watertown officers. The second was arrested hours later after he was found hiding in a boat in a residential neighborhood. The Memorial Day Parade in Milford will take place May 27. It will begin at 10 a.m. on East Main Street, and march down East Main and Main streets to Draper Memorial Park. It is expected to include Milford veterans, police, firefighers, girl …

Consultants Hired for Casino Work, Review Timeline Compressed

Milford Selectmen on Monday listened to an update on newly retained consultants who will work on the town's behalf in analyzing the impacts of a proposed casino. The work must take place in a matter of months.

Operating under a timeline squeezed by the state Gaming Commission, Milford Selectmen were told Monday that a host agreement with a proposed casino developer would have to be completed by the end of August to meet the new deadlines. But the town's attorney handling the casino review said it could be done. "The timeline is tight, but I do think it's doable," said Kimberly Copp, a partner with the law firm Shefsky & Froelich. In an update for the board, she said the law firm had hired several consultants to work on the town's behalf. They include: Foxwoods Massachusetts, which hopes to build a $1 billion resort casino in Milford, will pay for the town consultants to review the impact of its proposed development. "They gave us no pushback," …

K. -- I'm not in favor of a casino in Milford, but your description of what the Selectmen have done or are doing is incorrect. All three were angry and disappointed in the presentation that Foxwoods made on April 8th, but Bill Buckley is the only one of the three who has made his opposition to the project clear. Brian and Dino have been pretty consistent about wanting more information and were …   more ›

Hoboken Club Receives 10-Day License Suspension

The Hoboken Citizens Club, one of Milford's oldest private clubs, will lose its alcohol pouring license for 10 days. The sanction is punishment for a bachelor party in which women danced in the nude.

Milford Selectmen voted 2-1 Monday to punish the Hoboken Citizens Club with a 10-day suspension of its alcohol license, for an incident involving nude dancing . The punishment will take effect from May 8 through 17, and will exclude previously scheduled events on May 10 and 11, which means the events will still be allowed to take place. The incident happened on April 5, during a bachelor party at the club at 252 Central St. A guest brought two women to the party, who disrobed and danced. The nude dancing took place without the knowledge of the club management. Club manager Louis Piazza had left for the night, and the bartender who witnessed the dancing did not contact him, according to a report filed by Milford Police Chief Thomas O'…

Open For Business

Central Tavern to Open in May

The Central Tavern will take over the space on Central Street that used to be the Nite Lite Lounge.

A bar and restaurant owned by an Uxbridge restaurateur and a Milford firefighter will open next month on Central Street. The Central Tavern is expected to open at 31 Central St. by May. It is owned by Paul Iacovelli, who runs Kapi's Pub on North Main Street in Uxbridge, and Alfred Pighetti, a Milford firefighter who said he plans to retire next year and is looking for a new business venture. Milford Selectmen approved the transfer of the business license, alcohol and entertainment licenses, subject to Board of Health approval of plans. The Night Lite Lounge, the most recent business in that location, closed in November 2012.

Foxwoods Unveils its Milford Casino Proposal, Selectmen Skeptical

The Foxwoods Resort Casino proposes a resort complex of 300,000 square-feet. Milford Selectmen, listening to the proposed scale for the first time, said they were skeptical it could be done under the state timeframe.

Foxwoods Resort Casino and its partners are pursuing a resort casino complex of $1 billion in Milford, featuring 300,000-square-feet of developed space and 350 hotel rooms. The proposal, outlined Monday in a meeting of the Milford Board of Selectmen, is one of three that is before the Massachusetts Gaming Commission for the greater Boston region.  The now-named "Foxwoods Massachusetts" resort casino would include 4,725 slots, 125 game tables, 350 hotel rooms and an unidentified number of specialty restaurants, entertainment venues and other features, according to an overview. In a brief presentation, Scott Butera, the chief executive officer of Foxwoods Resort Casino, addressed — in general terms — a few of the issues that have been raised…

Marty, Right on!! A casino is nothing more than a cesspool of sin. It directs it's focus on the weak and addicted. In my book that is BLOOD MONEY! Gambling destroys lives, family/friend relationships and promotes illicit behavior. Why in God's name would we want such a disgusting and corrosive business like that in Milford? The moral decay in America is bad enough without bringing it to this …   more ›

Several Hundred Casino Opponents Turn Out for Milford Meeting

The crowd that showed up for the Milford Selectmen's meeting Monday spilled into the hallways and extended up to the main floor of Milford Town Hall. The chairman would not move the board's meeting to the upper chamber.

Several hundred people attempted to attend the Milford Selectmen's meeting Monday, to listen to a scheduled presentation of casino opponents. The board chairman would not move the meeting to the Town Hall's upper chambers to accommodate the turnout, angering many in the crowd, who would not leave the building and tried to jam into the smaller meeting space. "Move it to a bigger room upstairs," called out one man, frustrated because he could not see the presentation, nor hear it. At one point, Milford Police Chief Thomas O'Loughlin tried to create a channel into the selectmen's room, telling people they needed to comply with the state Fire Code. The representatives of Casino-Free Milford had been scheduled to give a 20-minute presentation, …
