Scarlet Hawks Move to State Title Match in Softball

Milford High School defeated Central Catholic 3-0 to move ahead to the state finals.

Going into Milford’s MIAA Division 1 semi-final match against Central Catholic, Shannon Smith needed 11 strikeouts to break the 1,200 K barrier and reach her goal. By the top of the 7th inning, the barrier had been broken, but you would not have known it looking at the focus of the future Kentucky Wildcat. “I knew that I needed 11 strikeouts but I wasn’t keep tabs during the game. When it happened I didn’t know and my dad started to cheer so I figured that was it,” Smith said. Behind 14 strikeouts from Smith and early runs on offense, the Scarlet Hawks picked up a 3-0 win over the Raiders to earn the privilege of defending their state title this weekend at Worcester State University. “It comes down to seven innings away from being state …

Carolyn Banach Appointed Principal of Milford High School

Carolyn Banach, an assistant principal, will replace Michael Tempesta, who is leaving at the end of the school year to become superintendent of Saugus public schools.

Carolyn Banach, an assistant principal at Milford High School, will be promoted to principal of the school, Superintendent Robert Tremblay announced Thursday. She will begin July 1, and will take the place of Michael Tempesta, the high school principal of the past three years. Tempesta has accepted a new position as superintendent of Saugus public schools. Banach has served as an assistant principal at the high school for the past five years. In that role, she has led programs and overseen initiatives including Advanced Placement, PSAT, MCAS, graduation, freshman orientation, student leadership, College Board testing programs, and the Virtual Learning High School.  Before joining the Milford school system, she was an assistant principal …

Milford's Chris Colabello Debuts in Major League Baseball

Chris Colabello, 29, a graduate of Milford High School, made his major league debut with the Minnesota Twins Wednesday.

After several years of playing professional baseball in the minor leagues and Canada, Chris Colabello of Milford made his Major League Baseball debut Wednesday. Colabello, 29, started in right field for the Minnesota Twins Wednesday, and batted sixth against the Atlanta Braves, according to a report in the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. Colabello will play 3rd base for the Twins, according to the team website.

Milford High Principal Selected as Saugus Superintendent

Mike Tempesta, the principal of Milford High School, has been selected as superintendent for the Saugus public school system.

Milford will lose its high school principal, Mike Tempesta, to the Saugus school system. Tempesta was chosen to be the next superintendent of the 3,000-student Saugus system in a 4-1 vote, according to the Daily Item in Lynn. Tempesta has been principal at Milford High School since 2010. He was among three finalists for the Saugus position. A contract will be negotiated, following a background check.

Newsweek Top-Rated School List Leaves Off Milford High

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek has ranked the high schools nationally, but the criteria the magazine used leaves Milford High School off of the list. The school did rank in the top 1,200 nationally by US News, coming in at #1,177 nationwide and #37 in the state. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. Milford High Principal Finalist in Saugus for Superintendent

Mike Tempesta, principal at Milford High School, is one of three finalists for the position of Saugus public schools superintendent.

Mike Tempesta, principal of Milford High School, is one of three finalists for a superintendent position in a suburb on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Tempesta was named Monday as a finalist for the Saugus Public Schools superintendent position. In a press release, the nearly 3,000-student district said the following: "The Saugus School Committee & Superintendent Search Committee proudly announces three finalists for the position of Saugus Superintendent of Schools. Ann Bradshaw, current Superintendent in Mashpee, MA; Patricia Lally, Assistant Superintendent in Tewksbury, MA; and Michael Tempesta, Milford High School Principal. Michael Tracy, Milford Senior, Named to MA Basketball All-Academic Team

The Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association has named Michael Tracy to the All-Academic Team.

Michael Tracy, a senior forward for the Milford High School varsity Basketball Team, has been named to the Massachusetts Basketball All-Academic team. The designation by the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association was announced Wednesday. Tracy will attend Boston College in the fall. Academically, he is in the Top 10 in the Class of 2013.

Milford Pitching Ace Too Much For Mansfield Softball

An 18 strikeout performance by Shannon Smith helped the Scarlet Hawks get past the Hornets 5-1

Facing the best pitcher in the state, there was little the Hornets could do to get on the board against a strong Milford team. Behind Shannon Smith's 18 strikeouts, the Milford Scarlet Hawks picked up a 5-1 win over the Hornets. With the Hawks doing most of their damage in the top of the second inning, a double by Taylor LeBerun brought Rachel Levine home followed by Lauren Hanna's single that allowed Kiley Richards to put Milford's second run on the board. Allie Piergustavo made it a 3-0 game after reaching home on a passed ball later in the inning. The Scarlet Hawks are now 3-0 this season. Down 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth with two outs, Erin Galvin cut the deficit to three off a Moriah Baker hit. Unfortunately, Baker was a split …

Cheerleaders Earn National Championship

The Milford High School Cheerleaders won a national championship title this month in Florida.

The Milford High School Varsity Cheerleaders recently competed at the Cheerleaders of America (COA) Ultimate National Cheerleading Championship held March 29-30 in Orlando, Florida.  The team, coached by Heather Johnson, performed so well both days that they captured the National Championship in the Advanced Large Varsity division. The girls, who compete in the Advanced Large Varsity Division, completed a short routine packed with stunts, gymnastics, pyramids, jumps, dance and motions.  Judges evaluate cheer routines for difficulty of skills, technique of skills, execution of skills, timing, and team percentage of skills, while at the same time issuing penalties for each and every error made on the mat.
