Casino Forum Draws Proponents, Opponents, Selectman to Boston

Scott Butera, CEO of Foxwoods Resort Casino, was among the panelists at a casino forum at Suffolk University's Sawyer Business School.

BOSTON — Suffolk University drew proponents and opponents of casino gambling to a single forum Thursday, including representatives from Milford and the proposed Foxwoods Massachusetts casino. Scott Butera, chief executive officer of Foxwoods Resort Casino, the dominant partner in the casino application for Milford, was a panelist, as were Steve Trettel, a co-chairman of of Casino Free Milford, and Milford Selectman Brian Murray. Butera described the Milford proposal in a powerpoint presentation, emphasizing that the $1 billion casino application would bring good paying jobs to the Milford region. He disputed opponents' contention that the average casino job would pay less than $35,000 a year, based on the Foxwoods casino record. "If our …

Milford Elections 2013

Final Election Results: 77 elected to Town Meeting, including 20 Write-ins

Final election results were certified Friday.

Seventy-seven people were elected Tuesday as Milford Town Meeting members, leaving just five openings due to tie votes among write-in candidates. Twenty of the 77 were write-in candidates, including 15 people who are supporters of Casino Free Milford, according to the organization's spokeswoman. The anti-casino group asked its members to run as write-in candidates, to help block any rezoning request for the casino that could come before Town Meeting in the next year. Five openings remain: three in Precinct 1; one in Precinct 4; and one in Precinct 7. These openings can be filled before the beginning of annual Town Meeting, by vote of the members in that precinct, according to Milford Town Clerk Amy Hennessy Neves. People interested in …

Milford Casino Opponents Elected as Town Meeting Members

Initial election results show 18 people were elected Tuesday to Milford Town Meeting through write-in campaigns. Most are casino opponents.

Milford casino opponents have elected as many as 12 people as Town Meeting members, part of an effort to stop the casino development should it move ahead to a member vote. The Town Meeting would vote on a rezoning, which would be required for the property. A rezoning vote requires a two-thirds majority, according to town officials. Casino-Free Milford asked its volunteers to run for Town Meeting this year as write-in candidates with the purpose of stopping the casino development. "This was just one part of our strategy," said Geri Eddins, a spokeswoman for the organization. Eddins identified 12 Casino-Free Milford volunteers as among the write-in candidates who would seem to have been elected, based on preliminary vote totals. In all, 75 …

x I have deleted my posts to keep the thread on topic. This can be discussed on another article on the issue if it arises. Basically what it amounts to is this. Those who are strongly in favor of the casino will not be convinced otherwise. Those who strongly oppose the casino will also not be convinced otherwise. What is important is that the process has a chance to work the way it was set up. …   more ›

Surrounding Communities Organize Against Milford Casino

A small group met last night at the Adams Middle School to break down their fight against the Crossroads Casino.

Since casino developer David Nunes teamed up with Foxwoods and submitted a proposal before the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, opponents have been waiting for more information. But that time has come to an end, according to Ken Rockett and others from the Casino Free Milford group, time is ticking away and a casino proposal is expected to be selected for development within the next 10 months.  “We don’t know what the developer wants to do and I think he’s going to keep that a secret for as long as possible,” Dave Bastille, one of the long-term opponents, said. “We do know enough to make a stink.” At their meeting in Holliston last night Rockett, Bastille and others organized into three groups to break down the fight and make dissemination…

Anti-Casino Protestors Gather, Inspiring Honks, Some Hecklers

A small band of Casino Free Milford supporters waved signs outside Milford Town Hall Monday afternoon.

A small group of Casino Free Milford supporters waved signs at passing motorists Monday, soliciting honks and thumbs-up from supporters, as well as a few yelled comments from opponents. The protestors started their display about 4 p.m., and grew in numbers slowly, as supporters were able to get away from work schedules. At 6 p.m., about a dozen people were participating. Among the oldest was Joseph Cosentino, 83, who said he worried a casino in Milford would draw more drug traffic and prostitution. "It's not a good environment for schools, for children that live here," he said. "It will hurt the town." Casino-Free Milford supporters plan to attend the meeting of Milford Selectmen at 7 p.m. Monday, to stand with their leaders who are …

Mary, they can only stuff about 50 people in that room. Count the chairs and then count the people standing. I don't mind the mis-calculation it's more important to them than it is to me. I only bring it up because the Anti-Casino group in Foxborough and now Milford like to embellish their claims. There are a core group of individuals in that group that are intelligent and respectable people. I'm…   more ›

Letter to the Editor

Letter: 'We Can Make the Voice of Opposition Loud and Clear'

In a letter, the co-chairmen of Casino-Free Milford encourage Milford residents to stand with them Monday, and show town selectmen that there is strong opposition to the casino.

Editor's Note: the following letter was distributed Friday by Steven Trettel and John Seaver, co-chairmen of Casino-Free Milford. Milford has a long rich history steeped in pride and tradition. Many families, including ours, have roots in Milford, dating back several generations. We have proudly watched our families and extended families grow, all making the decision to live in Milford. Instilled in us as children, that sense of love and pride in community is what inspired us to give back to Milford, each becoming involved in the Church and town affairs.   Through the years, we have seen Milford change, grow and develop, becoming a thriving community.  We now have access to major highways and continue to welcome many new citizens, …

Okay, I am also against a casino but don't agree with all this drama. There is no moral peril of having a casino. We are not going into an abyss of depravity. My opposition is the lie that is perpetuated by the casino industry about the contributions that a casino brings to the community. I have lived in Milford for 21 years and raised two boys here. I moved here from upstate NY. They put a …   more ›

Casino Opposition Encouraged to Ramp Up Operations

Stephanie Crimmins, a leader of Casino Free Foxborough, spoke to residents of Milford and the surrounding towns about how they can stop proposed Crossroads project.

In order to prevent a casino from coming to Milford, speakers at last night's Casino Free Milford encouraged residents to begin spreading the word about the downsides of a casino. The group invited Stephanie Crimmins to speak to residents about what she did while working to oppose the casino proposed in Foxborough. Crimmins focused on what worked in Foxborough and what she learned going through the process of fighting the Wynn-Kraft casino proposal. “What really worked for us in Foxborough was the drop in house values, they dropped 20 percent on the roads leading to and around Foxwoods,” she said. While Crimmins was volunteering in Foxborough she was able to meet with a former mayor of Ledyard Connecticut, the home of Foxwoods casino. “…

Casino Opponents to Present Arguments Monday to Milford Selectmen

The Milford Board of Selectmen has invited a group opposed to a casino in Milford to address the board Monday.

Editor's Note: At the request of the Milford Selectmen, a group that is opposed to a casino in Milford will present some of their concerns at the board's March 18 meeting. A Colorado-based developer, David Nunes, has applied for a state license to place a resort-style casino in Milford, on acreage near the Holliston line, east of I-495 and north of Route 16. The group opposed to the proposed "Crossroads Massachusetts" casino, Casino-Free Milford, is expected to address the board beginning at 7:20 p.m. Monday. The group released the following statement on Thursday: Casino-Free Milford, a growing movement of Milford citizens concerned about the proposed development of a destination resort casino in town, is urging all Milford residents to …

Celestiarcana, Are you even aware that the town of Milford would not receive ONE CENT from the casino?! The state gets the money!! Yet we would be responsible for the costs of upgrading our sewer, water, electrical, police (for the increased crime) and fire systems. Milford Opponents to Casino Meet, Plan Next Steps

The opponents of a Milford casino proposal met this week to organize their efforts.

The opposition to a Milford casino is gaining organization and people, and beginning a campaign to reach potential voters. Although opponents to the casino project live in several towns, including Milford, only Milford voters will have a direct say in whether the casino proposal moves forward. The town will get a referendum vote on the project, if the developer reaches an agreement with town officials. The Casino Free Milford group held a private, organizational meeting at Milford Town Hall on Wednesday, according to a release from the organization. The group intially met in a public session last month, but this time held a members-only meeting. According to a written summary distributed to media following the meeting, the crowd was …

A Starting Point for Milford Casino Opponents

For the first time since the filing of a casino proposal, opponents met in Milford to begin organizing a campaign to defeat the project.

How do you fight a resort casino development of up to $1 billion? Beginning with small steps, and leading up to a larger campaign. For the first time since the filing of a casino application for a site in Milford, near Interstate 495, opponents met at Milford Town Hall Monday and talked about how to get organized, grow in numbers, and influence local voters. About 60 people attended the organizational meeting, spilling out of the meeting room into the hallway. Most attendees were from Holliston and Hopkinton, based on a show of hands. But as some of the participants pointed out, the meeting was not widely publicized. "It's not that Milford people don't care," said Milford resident Beverly Swymer. "They didn't know about it. I'm sure more …
