The Milford School Committee reviewed an analysis by school officials Thursday that showed passing scores on AP exams in math, science and English improved while the high school participated in the Massachusetts Math and Science Initiative.
Did Milford students gain something from the school system participating in the Massachusetts Math and Science Initiative? According to an analysis provided by school officials, students earned higher scores on Advanced Placement exams, and more students earned passing scores, which enables them to earn college credit. According to Superintendent Robert Tremblay: • The number of students earning the top scores on the AP exam – either a 4 or a 5 – increased from 74 to 94 on exams in math, science and English. • The number of students earning a passing score on the AP exam – a 3 or better – increased from 41 to 83 in math. • Milford High School had a 50 percent increase in low-income students taking AP exams in math, science and English. • …

Through a union vote, high school teachers have ended a program that included Milford in the Massachusetts Math and Science Initiative.
Milford teachers have ended a program that focused on recruiting more high school students into Advanced Placement classes, a decision that took the administration by surprise and infuriated several School Committee members. In a 68-14 vote, the high school faculty ended the agreement between Milford schools and the Massachusetts Math and Science Initiative after its first year. The vote, taken May 25, prompted the executive committee of the Milford Teachers Association to immediately end participation in the intiative program. The reason for teacher dissatisfaction with the program was not explained by union leaders, but the superintendent and program president said this week the concern centered around how students were recruited to …

Milford High School has more students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses.
Enrollment in Advanced Placement classes in math, English and science has doubled over the last three years at Milford High School, as administrators have opened the classes to more students and made more courses available. This year, AP Statistics and AP Environmental Science were created. The latter is the most popular, with 50 students enrolled, said Carolyn Banach, an assistant principal. At Milford, the enrollment in AP courses in math, science and English has climbed from 137 in 2008 to 275 this year. (The numbers do not include students enrolled in other AP courses, including history) Last year, the number of qualifying scores — the scores that qualify the student for college credit — increased from 80 to 131 in Milford. Milford …

Milford Advanced Placement scores increased in 2011, and enrollment in AP courses is up too.
Milford students are taking more college-level Advanced Placement classes in high school, and more of them are seeing it pay off with college credit. In an update for the School Committee, Milford High School Principal Mike Tempesta Thursday revealed the following: "What we're trying to do is open up access in the AP program to the entire student body," Tempesta said. "We're looking for kids to stretch themselves." Advanced Placement is considered a college-level class, and students who score high enough on the annual exam can qualify for college credit for their work. Teachers have to receive specialized training to teach AP classes, and the curriculum follows a national standard. Research has shown, Tempesta said, that even students who …
