Farmers Market in Milford Gains Momentum

Five farmers or vendors, including a cheese maker, have contacted a Milford resident organizing a farmers market.

A group of volunteers is making progress on a farmers market for Milford, meeting last week to organize and split up tasks.

And five prospective vendors and farmers, including a cheese maker and a honeybee farmer, have indicated they would be willing to sell products at the market this summer, said David Morganelli, chairman of a volunteer town committee organizing the effort.

The town's Board of Health agent is working with the group to draft guidelines for vendors who bake or create items for sale, to make sure the goods comply with state and local health requirements.

The effort is expected to be discussed Aug. 5 by Milford Selectmen, Morganelli said, including the possible selection of a preferred site for the market.

The market could begin as early as Aug. 24, if selectmen approve and vendors are signed up, he said. The market is expected to run on Saturdays, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Morganelli said he hoped to open the market with up to 10 vendors. Once the market gets an official go-ahead, he said he could reach out to the area farms, bakeries and other businesses.
