Foxwoods Growth; But into what?

The Foxwoods’  “jobs” and “growth” line of reasoning is really getting stale and overused.  The gamblers keep saying “growth” but, what do they want us to grow into?  With a casino in town the options for growth become increasingly limited by virtue of whom or what other interests would consider relocating to an established casino town?  Answer; none that come to mind beyond a business that is ancillary to the gambling process, i.e. pawn shops, check cashing, cash loans and what have you.  A gambling palace is not an attractor for tech. businesses, light industry, research facilities, medical institutions and the like.  A casino says more about the people that welcome it than the casino can say about itself.  Worse yet the presence of a casino speaks volumes about the host community and its resident’s hopes for the future.  What does become evident however is the town’s desire to just give-it-up for the fast buck. 

 With respect to Foxwoods’ “jobs” hype a significantly smarter course of action would be to greatly expand the presence of Milford Regional Hospital.  We have a medical facility in our town that believes in and strives for constant improvement of the physical plant and continued expansion of its healthcare capabilities.  There are many documented physician residencies at the hospital that yield top notch local physician practices and continued affiliation with Milford Regional.  The professional jobs associated with retention of local medical practioners is a direction we should be offering our kids as they advance through their learning years.  Not to discredit jobs that could become available at a casino, when the term “future” is so easily bantered about one must really think long and hard about it.
