Milford Farmers Market Seeks Vegetable Farmers

The Milford Farmers Market needs vegetables.

What's a farmers market without fresh veggies?

The Milford Farmers Market plans to give produce farmers a marquee space in the Saturday events, scheduled to begin on Aug. 24.

But the market needs farmers and other vendors to apply quickly, allowing a Board of Health review of the applications, and it needs more vegetable farmers to join in, in particular.

The movement to organize a farmers market came together quickly over the summer, but by the end of July, many vegetable farmers said they had already committed themselves on Saturdays to other events, organizer David Morganelli told selectmen this week.

Organizers have received commitments from many other vendors, including Oliva's Market, which will sell homemade breads and other items, a honey producer, a fish market and others. The volunteers encourage bakers and other producers of fresh foods and items to apply for a space in the market.

It will be held from 9 to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, next to Milford Town Hall.

Milford Selectmen gave the initial go-ahead Monday, and so now the recruitment of area farmers begins. Interested applicants will pay only $10 for inclusion in the market this summer, allowing them to sell their products directly to customers in Milford.

The form will be reviewed by the town's Board of Health. And each seller agrees to follow the requirements for the site and for sales.

Questions about the application process for vendors can be referred to Lisa Tamagni, clerk for the Milford Board of Health, at 508-634-2315, during work hours.
