Keene State College senior thrower Whitney Cyr was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District I women’s track and field team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced [June 3.]

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

“Academics and athletics are extremely important to me,” said Cyr.  “I strived to excel in both and getting this honor shows I was able to work hard enough to achieve it.”

Cyr, a journalism major, had a lot on her plate the past four years. A four-year member of the Keene State track team, Cyr qualified the past three seasons for the indoor and outdoor New England Championships.  She earned All-Little East Conference honors (indoors) the last two seasons in the weight throw event, placing second as a senior.  This past spring, Cyr also earned All-LEC honors, finishing second in the hammer throw and fourth in the shot-put with a personal record performance.

Graduating Magna Cum Laude, Cyr was one of four KSC students to remain in the school’s honors program all four years.  She was executive editor of the school newspaper, which received 13 national awards and one of six finalists for the National College Journalist of the Year honor.  In addition, Cyr was the winner of the Bruce Levine award for scholarly excellence.

Cyr said time management was the key. “Every day I would wake up and prioritize what I needed to do and just make sure I got everything done,” she said.  “It was extremely stressful, but looking back and graduating now, I wouldn’t change a thing.”

This summer, Cyr will work as an editorial intern for Patch, a community specific news and information outlet in Metro West Boston, and look to attend grad school in the fall.

Cyr is the fourth Keene State student-athlete to be recognized as a Capital One Academic All-District I member this year. Senior Brian Swindell and junior Hayley Kenyon were named to men's and women's soccer teams respectively while senior swimmer Austin Harris was selected to the men's at-large team for the second year in a row.
