VIDEO: Egg Drop at Stacy Middle

The classic engineering challenge for middle school students: design a package that will protect a fresh egg when dropped from a significant height, in this case, the stairwell.

The Stacy Middle School Science Club (grades 5-7) held its 6th annual Egg Drop Challenge on Monday, led by Dr. Bob Gilmore, the club’s academic advisor and a 5th grade science teacher.

The 34 teams designed devices to protect the egg from progressively higher drops from the central staircase. Because the club has 142 members, the challenge is extended to Jan. 14 to accommodate everyone.

Each team was named after a famous scientist, such as Francis Bacon or Jonas Salk. The students who are successful will sign a special Egg Drop Trophy (an ostrich egg).
