A 10-year-old ban on flip flops in one Massachusetts town has some students working to get it reversed.

Weymouth High School students are trying to get the ban lifted as part of their senior project, according to Fox 25, Boston.

Flip flops and backless shoes have been banned at Weymouth High School for the past decade. The Weymouth Public Schools dress code standards expressly prohibits flip flops along with “athletic/beach sandals” in its dress code standards.

The ban was imposed by the town’s School Committee because they believed sandals posed a safety hazard, according to the report.

The School Committee’s Policy Committee is deadlocked on the issue, which is expected to be taken up by the Weymouth School Committee next week.

YES - flip flops should be allowed in school! It is ABSURD not to allow them. Do we really need to control what kids wear on their feet??? I haven't seen too many "injury by flip-flop" cases, have you? Give me a break. Parents are insane these days.

With all this pro and con posturing, it might be helpful to learn the reasoning underlying the Weymouth School Board when they invoked or voted for this policy a decade ago. Nothing (as in life) is as transparent as the question posed for comments.

You New Englanders really need to learn how to chill. Except for Prometheus. Prometheus is already cool. I say ban all shoes altogether. Require humans to walk barefoot on the Earth in the sunshine for a minimum of 1 hr a day and reconnect to Mother Nature. The problem is not flipflops. In fact, flipflops are a step in the right direction. The real problem is materialism ~ the disconnect with Nature.

I wear flip flops. Their especially good when you go to court because the judge likes people who dress well
