School Superintendent Robert Tremblay 'Proficient' in Evaluation

The Milford Superintendent earned a positive annual review Thursday.

The Milford Superintendent of Schools got a "proficient" rating from the Milford School Committee Thursday, which praised him for a new sense of direction in curriculum development.

Tremblay earned high scores for his communication, with parents and staff and the public, as well as for moving the district toward a new evaluation system for teachers. He was praised for his responsiveness to parents on school security concerns following the shooting deaths in Newtown, CT, and for his collaboration with other public officials.

He was evaluated on standards including instructional leadership, management and operations, family and community engagement, and professional culture.

The proficient rating he received overall is one level below the top threshold: exemplary.

School member Joseph Morais likened the score on the evaluation to a 'B' but said superintendents who achieve an exemplary score would be considered trend-setters and national standouts.

"You're right on the cusp of that," he said. "You've built a great team around you."

One member, Donald Quattrochio, said he appreciated the work that Tremblay is doing, but was upset that Milford High School went almost a year without a guidance director. He said he fielded several complaints from parents, and felt the guidance department was not responsive to parents.

The former guidance director, Peter Bruce, was fired last summer after an arrest in Framingham on three charges of assault with a dangerous weapon. He was found not guilty of the charges in a trial last month. His replacement was was hired at the end of the school year.

Tremblay told the committee members his job is a "labor of love" and said he appreciated their confidence. "You don't work a day in your life, when you love what you do."
