$2.5M Contract for Athletics Fields [VIDEO]

The town Community Fields Committee on Thursday approved a $2.5 million contract for a new athletics complex near Milford High School.

Within a few weeks, contractors will begin a $2.5 million revamping of the athletics fields near , completing an overhaul that began a few months ago with tree removal.

The $2,457,600 contract with Green Acres Landscaping Construction Co., of Lakeville, was approved Thursday in a meeting of the, said Mike Bresciani, Milford Parks director.

Milford Town Meeting voters in October approved $3 million for the work.

Of the six bids received, Green Acres submitted the lowest bid. The bids ranged from $2.45 million to $2.71 million for the work, and the second lowest bidder was just $25,000 more than Green Acres, Bresciani said. "They were very, very close," he said.

The current athletic facilities, built in the '70s are dated and in disrepair. The new complex will include artificial turf, a drainage system, bleachers and a press box, a full track and field replacement with a polyresin running surface, tennis courts and a parking area. The bathrooms and concession stand are expected to be improved in a separate contract.

Work on the fields is expected to begin following a legal review of the contract, but possibly as soon as a few weeks. Contract completion will be Dec. 1, which will require the Milford High School football team to find an alternate site for home games this coming season.

Brian Murray, a town selectman and member of the Community Fields Committee, said he was pleased at the number of bids submitted for the work.

Green Acres has previously completed athletic fields renovations at Foley Field in Worcester and the Hopkinton community fields on Fruit Street, as well as some work in Milford in Prospect Heights.

"It's going to be a busy six months," Murray said.
