Snow and Ice Removal Budget Depleted

About 70 percent of the budgeted amount for snow and ice removal has already been spent, thanks to an icy start to the new year.

The Milford Highway Department has spent about 70 percent of its $500,000 snow and ice removal budget, according to Highway Surveyor Scott Crisafulli.

The total snow fall so far this winter has been 27 inches, he said. About $350,000 has been spent to date on labor and supplies, including sand and salt.

"Due to the colder than normal temperatures, we have had to sand/salt many times for very minimal amounts of snow fall," Crisafulli wrote, in an email. "This tends to eat away at the budget quickly."

In addition, he said, the department has had to purchase salt using emergency arrangements for delivery, due to a shortage of salt trucks available for deliveries.
