Selectman, Housing Contests on Ballot

Westborough's annual town election is March 5.

Selectman and one Westborough Housing Authority seat will be contested at Westborough's March 5 annual town election.

The 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline for returning nomination papers for the ballot passed with four selectman candidates and two candidates for the housing board's available three-year term, Town Clerk Nancy Yendriga said.

A potential race for school committee, meanwhile, did not materialize. Incumbents Stephen Doret and Bruce Tretter returned their papers for election to new three-year terms. However, Westminster Way resident Danielle Carrigo took out papers but did not return them.

The race for selectman will involve incumbents Timothy Dodd and Leigh Emery, Ruggles Street resident Stephen Faris and Mayberry Drive resident Francis Sowa. Two three-year terms are on the ballot.

The housing authority race is between Whitney Street resident Jill Dupree and Smith Street resident William Linnane. The incumbent, Charles Naples, instead will be unopposed for the five-year term on the ballot. That incumbent, Julie Pappazsis, will not seek re-election.

Voters also will see one candidate for Westborough Public Library trustee -- but three three-year terms -- on the ballot.

Incumbent Helena Engberg will seek another term. Colleagues Karen Griegal and Geralyn Kohler will not seek re-election, though. And no residents took out nomination papers. The top two write-in candidates will get elected if they accept the office, Yendriga said. If the election ends without two new library trustees, vacancies will be filled until the March 2014 annual election through a joint appointment by selectmen and the trustees, she said.

Incumbent planning board member Joanne Mallozzi also returned papers for re-election. She will be unopposed for the five-year term.
