Milford Senior Center to Extend Hours During Heatwave

The Senior Center, which is air conditioned, will remain open until 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and will open on Saturday, too.

The Milford Senior Center will remain open longer on Thursday and Friday, and open on Saturday, to provide a cooling center for local seniors during the heat wave.

The air-conditioned center will be open until 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, said newly appointed director Sue Clark.

Staff and volunteers will be available during those hours.

The temperatures in Milford are expected to peak Thursday afternoon, at 96 degrees, before falling slightly to 94 degrees on Friday. The forecast for Saturday is a high of 89, according to the National Weather Service.

Senior citizens are particularly vulnerable to heat illnesses during conditions such as these. The Board of Health on Monday issued a set of guidelines for coping with the high temperatures, and suggested that people find an air conditioned setting for at least a few hours a day to cool the body.

The region is under a heat advisory on Wednesday, which means that due to humidity and temperatures, it feels like at least 100.
