Assisted Living Center Proposed for Site of Former Orchard

What once was an apple orchard, at Birch Street and Medway Road, could become a 90-unit assisted living facility. The Milford Planning Board will hold a public hearing Tuesday night.

A New Hampshire development company wants to build a 90-unit assisted living facility on a 5-acre site at the corner of Birch Street and Medway Road.

The development, called "Cornerstone," is before the Milford Planning Board Tuesday for a public hearing, and a possible vote. The hearing begins at 7:05 p.m. at Town Hall.

The proposal would develop a now largely-vacant parcel, which used to be an apple orchard. SPL Development Group, of Amherst, NH, wants to build a one- and two-story structure in a series of wings. A parking area of 60 spaces also is included.

The proposed 66,726-square-foot assisted living facility would include a 25-bed alzheimer unit, said Town Planner Larry Dunkin.

Access would be off Birch Street. A fire lane would extend to Medway Road.

The property is owned by Joseph A. and Lucille A. Ciaramicoli. A portion of the proposed development acreage is zoned for single-family residential; the remainder for highway industrial.

An existing two-and-a-half story house and driveway would remain. The immediate neighbors include a condominium complex and The Alamo restaurant.

The development requires a special permit from the Planning Board, as well as site plan approval.

The architect is Udelsman Associates, of Hollis, NH.
