What Would You Put Here?

This former Dunkin Donuts store, empty and surrounded by a fence, is blocking the view of the 19th Century First Unitarian Universalist Church. What would you put here instead?

The old Dunkin Donuts is gone, but its empty shell remains, surrounded by a chain link fence. Many people think it's an eyesore, and it blocks the view of the beautiful

At the Milford Selectmen's meeting, one of the selectmen suggested the Board of Library Trustees acquire the lot and turn it into more parking, for the library.

What do you think? What should go there?

Just what Milford doesn't need, another fast food restaurant, pizza joint, coffee shop, etc. etc.
Ed Bertorelli July 11, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Yes Mary, it was a bus station and a strip of stores- a fish market - an office for newspaper distributors and on the Pine Street side a great bakery and a Chinese Laundry. I'd like to see a park there or parking for Library would be excellent. Of course the funnier alternative would be either an ICE office or an extension/branch of the Ecuadorean Embassy in Milford
MilfordMomof3 July 11, 2012 at 01:04 PM
Based on the rest of the parks in town, it would soon be covered in graffiti and litter though
Maurice July 11, 2012 at 01:43 PM
notinmilfordanymore What about you donate your basement to them put a ICE right there?hows that sounds ?But just be aware that if their get deported you have to pump your own gas ,all the fast food restaurant will shut down and if that happening guess what?YOU will be by your self in the whole town !

Your right we don't need another fast food joint. We need Taco F'in Bell. There used to be one in Milford and they ripped it out of our hands. We were then forced to travel great distance to Franklin to get a fix, and that was taken away too! All our local Mexican restaurants are excellent but what if I need a case of tacos to go? Everyone must forget how great it was to black out and eat 5-1,000 tacos. Need it back.
fred July 11, 2012 at 03:02 PM
Maurice that's funny that you actually think they work hahaha priceless
Milford Senior Man July 11, 2012 at 03:31 PM
Maurice, lets start deporting.
Maurice July 11, 2012 at 03:54 PM
Hahaha thats funny !alright Good luck ON that ! As you guys know the whole congress is ON our side! I think the know What their doing right? Or you guys think youre smarter think on that way ????? One of you guys want to work on the fast food restaurant to make 8 bucks a hour? Or pump gas ? I don't think so ! So if you not gonna do it who's gonna do ?? And the last thing go take care of life and leave the hispanics alone and start to watch the Asians take over the country !

I say we turn it into a monument of sorts to capture the Milford Granite era. There's nothing here but buildings to show how grand the granite quarries were in this once small safe town.
Anne Berard July 11, 2012 at 05:02 PM
Sarcasm has its place, but it's not productive in the long term. Let's encourage beauty and open spaces. Prospective buyers to Milford will be drawn to that far more than a laundromat, a fast food joint, or an ICE office. The Greenleaf Garden Club does awesome work, making the town more lovely. If selectmen are listening, how about negotiating that space and funding the garden design and installation.

Did the selectman say the lot was for sale? Mary (or other commenters), do you know? I’m not sure the town can just buy it and turn it into a park – it might not be for sale. It’s a nice, flat, paved lot in a great location. If it were mine I would be more interested in leasing the space and keeping the property. It would take a lot of money to convince me to sell it.
Tyler Collins July 11, 2012 at 06:52 PM
Because it's a major issue in our town, and making light of it by cracking jokes about ICE or the plethora of immigrants in town can be a good way to blow off steam.
Babs01757 July 11, 2012 at 07:08 PM
Maurice because the illegals impact every part of our daily lives in Milford. Just read the police blog. And illegal is illegal. The fast food joints could be staffed by teenagers like they were before the illegal invasion of Milford. Back to the topic I vote for a park/ garden type area. A food kiosk would be a great idea too.
Myd Nevins July 11, 2012 at 07:47 PM
In all honesty, I have to agree with Maurice to the extent that it would be nice to see an article's comments go a whole day without unrelated immigration inserts. That being said.. Taco Bell all the way..
bella ann July 11, 2012 at 08:28 PM
I think the people who want it to be a park or a garden have forgotten what the parking lot used to look like when it wass a dunkin donuts.......If you put a park there it will only give the towns less then disrables a place to once again hang out and make ""deals"
Live and In Color July 11, 2012 at 09:38 PM
Nothing like a Taco Bell only because that location is horrible and downtown traffic sucks as is. Something that's office's only or a parking lot.
fred July 12, 2012 at 12:38 AM
soooooo we are talking about ILLEGAL immigrants for the longest time Asians, hispanics ,polish , italian, irish etc have been doing it legaly and doing it thelegal way like intended in my book already tells me these individuals have morals . Illegal immigration is becoming far to tollerant to Americans not just Milfordians any immigrant wants to come here legally to work and not exploit our benafits i will have the ut most respect for REGARDLESS of race !!!!

Having had a terrible experience at and after eating at a Taco Bell in 1993, I would prefer almost anything else...
eric July 12, 2012 at 11:39 AM
NO TACO BELL!! Main Street is littered with out of this country church's and restaurants already!
Mary MacDonald (Editor) July 12, 2012 at 04:34 PM
UglyHat, the library is looking for more parking and Selectman Brian Murray suggested they look at this spot. But it's privately owned and no one really talked about how much it might cost. I guess with school in session, parking is tight on the street and the library lot is small.
Joshua Lioce July 12, 2012 at 04:56 PM
I would like to see the return of Minna and Cooches Crystal Spa!!! Other than that, it would be good for parking or any type of professional retail use. Unforturnately, the market is not bearing many uses at the $ amount being asked. Parking would also be an added benefit to the downtown area.
Pete July 13, 2012 at 06:12 PM
Why don't we just change the name of the Patch to "The Illegal Immigrants News"? Or better yet, when someone types in the phrase "Illegal Immigrant" the Patch put in a filter that changes the phrase "Illegal Immigrant" to "My the weather is beautiful!"
Myd Nevins July 13, 2012 at 09:16 PM
Hey... Just as McDonalds isn't based in Ireland, Taco Bell is American founded, owned and deeply loved. Respect the chalupa and it will respect you.
Myd Nevins July 13, 2012 at 09:26 PM
The Milford Daily news reported that the owner or the property already has signed lease with a tenant. http://www.milforddailynews.com/news/x1052258886/Milford-Library-plan-calls-for-more-parking

I think the Taco Bell idea is perfect. With all of the hype when Chipotle replaced the one in Franklin, I expected this incredible Mexican food place with fresh ingredients that would leave me craving more. Instead I got a Mexican place with four choices, no chalupas, and a line winding out of the door for a nine dollar burrito. Granted, Taco Bell isn't the HEALTHIEST of Mexican fast food places, but right now, it's the best we've got on the East coast. And to the man who said to make it a Starbucks, please count the number of coffee places in this town. Why in the WORLD would you want to pay 10 bucks for a coffee that sounds nice because it's in Italian?
Myd Nevins July 16, 2012 at 07:53 PM
I originally heard the Franklin Taco Bell was going to just move further down Rt 140 towards Bob's Store. If anyone sees it opening there, let me know.
