Plaza Barber Shop and Hair Salon: Best of Milford for Hair Salons, Barbers

A Main Street business for almost 30 years, Plaza Barber Shop and Hair Salon is the winner of the Readers' Choice, Best of Milford poll for best barber or salon. The shop edged out Salon Vicaro after a tie-breaking count of business reviews and comments.

Nearly 1,000 votes were cast and dozens of comments and reviews were posted in the contest this week.

The business, at 208 Main St., squeaked by in a tie-breaker, based on points awarded for the number of votes cast in the online poll, and the number of positive reviews posted on the business listings. The tie was broken in Plaza Barber's favor because it had 12 positive reviews or comments posted by 9 a.m. Friday, slightly more than the eight collected by Salon Vicaro.

In online voting, Plaza Barber collected 203 votes — or 22 percent of 913 cast — and 12 reviews. Salon Vicaro had 212 votes, or 23 percent of the tally, and five reviews.

The third-place finish in the contest this week went to , which had 143 votes and 5 positive reviews.

Plaza Barber, owned by Ana Peniche and Susana DaSilva, has been a fixture on Main Street in Milford for about 30 years. Peniche and DaSilva purchased the business in 2008, and kept the name the same.

Peniche, who grew up in Milford, said she's worked at the salon for more than 20 years. "It's more like a family," she said, of the business. "It's very family oriented. We treat you like family."
The salon has four stylists. In addition to DaSilva and Peniche, Joell Shaver and Linda Goncalves work at Plaza Barber.

Salon Vicaro, on Beach Street, is owned by Becky Pereira, who opened her business 13 years ago. Initially located on Main Street, the salon moved to its Beach Street location 10 years ago. Pereira was gracious when she learned the salon had placed second following a tie-breaker.

"We have a pretty loyal customer base, between our customers and our families, they're very supportive," Pereira said. "I'm happy to know people voted for us. We're very lucky. We do very well."
