Casino, Immigration Debates Continue

As you probably know, we at Milford Patch love to use social media to complement our work and activity on this page. We have vibrant Twitter and Facebook pages; they're two tools that help us interact with and engage you, our readers.

Social Media Saturday is a weekly feature where Milford Patch will highlight some of what people shared on Facebook and other media in the past week.

We'll also point you to some new and interesting pages you may not have known about before.

Highlights of the Week

Here are some highlights of what took place this week:

• Sears announced this week that it will be of its Sears and Kmart stores. Readers were divided on whether Milford’s Kmart location should be included, with some readers ready to say goodbye: “The whole plaza is an eyesore," wrote one on our Facebook page. "They have the space in that area to build something nice, should be interesting.” But other readers were more cautious, warning that Kmart "may employ many people who count on it. An empty building with a 'For Lease' sign is sure not going to look any better.” Last we knew, the closure list, according to a report in the Boston Globe.
• There was a , resulting in the and of Jose Maylazhungo Saeteros, an Ecuadorian citizen who is living in the U.S. illegally. Saeteros’ illegal status and the revelation of a previous arrest reopened the recent debates about Milford’s illegal immigrant population. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a detainer for Saeteros, but frustrated residents expressed doubts about ICE’s ability or commitment to hold him. "What are they going to do? Put another ankle bracelet on him?" one woman commented on our Facebook site. "When he makes bail ... he will cut that off and flee the country."
• Also generating discussion this week was the news that voted down a proposed casino in that town. It is unclear what impact the vote will have on Milford's chances at a casino, but one reader cheered: "Way to go Foxborough!!! Now if only Milford would stand up and say NO."

Social Media Page of the Week

We'd like to give some recognition this week to the Facebook page of Friends of Milford Upper Charles Trail. This group, with 134 Facebook fans, describes itself as a “non-profit, all volunteer organization formed to work with the Parks Department in order to promote the proper use, development and care of the trail.” The page contains photos and updates of Trail news, including a handy map with distance measurements for various segments of the trail. One of the most recent updates contains information about how you can have a granite bench installed on the Trail.
