Scott Ellmore, 49, Milford Father, Husband, Active in Community

Ellmore, a graduate of Milford High School, was active in the Masonic Lodge and ran the child identification program for several years.

Scott Ellmore, 49, of Milford, who fought cancer for the past year, died on Friday at Milford Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Ellmore had sought alternative treatments for the past year, trying to defeat the cancer, despite a lack of coverage from insurance. As he did, the community where he had lived since childhood rallied behind him. As recently as a month ago, Milford cheerleaders organized a 5K run at the High School to help raise funds for his treatments.

Friends established an online site devoted to his effort, and raised more than $70,000 from friends, neighbors, classmates and others who knew him, as well as many people who did not know him personally.

Ellmore had lived in Milford since childhood, and graduated from Milford High School with the Class of 1982, according to an obituary published Saturday by Consigli-Ruggerio Funeral Home. He was employed in Marlborough as a field technician engineer at Adcole Corp. In Milford, he was active in the Masonic Lodge and ran the Child Identification Program for many years.

Maria Newman, a friend since high school, described him as one of the nicest people she knew. Even in high school, he crossed all lines, or cliques. "He was friends with everybody," she said. "No matter what group they were in."

Mr. Ellmore "was the epitome of what we need in society. He was the first person to help you if you were in trouble."
Newman organized and ran the GoFundMe site to help raise funds for Ellmore's treatment. His loss is devastating, she said. "He didn't want to leave his family," she said. "He had absolutely every intention of beating this thing."

Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Consigli-Ruggerio Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.
