Salvation Army Volunteers in Milford Distribute Thanksgiving Food Boxes

More than 200 families in Milford are expected to receive the Thanksgiving "baskets" today.

A hard-working group of volunteers will work for several hours Friday to distribute turkeys and the fixings for a large Thanksgiving dinner, to economically struggling families in Milford.

The Salvation Army volunteers distributed frozen turkeys, and pre-packed boxes containing stuffing, canned goods, gravy, mashed potatoes and other Thanksgiving essentials. Many of the families will also receive chicken. The boxes were packed in advance by several dozen volunteers, including some Rotarians.

Turkeys were piled high in the back of a box truck Friday morning, ready to be placed on top of each box and sent to a home. The turkeys were purchased using donations, and at a deep discount provided by local markets, including Shaw's, according to volunteers.

The distribution is expected to reach 200 to 250 families, said Capt. Jessica Irwin, and will be enough for three meals or more for each of the families.
