Volunteer Program Provides Free Snow Removal for Families of Troops

The SnowCare for Troops program also is looking for more volunteers.

Editor's Note: the following release was provided by THE BOSS Snowplow, which underwrites the volunteer service program.

This winter show your appreciation for our troops by supporting Project EverGreen’s SnowCare for Troops campaign, a community-based program that matches contractor and citizen volunteers with military families to provide free snow removal services. SnowCare for Troops (SCFT) is open to military families with a service member in active deployment and is underwritten by THE BOSS Snowplow.

With today’s U.S. military characterized by leaner forces and longer deployments compared to the military’s post World War II era, this places increased stress on the family members left to manage household tasks on the home front. SCFT was established to help ease the burden during the winter months for the nation’s 175,000 active-duty troops serving overseas.

Now entering its fourth year, the SCFT campaign currently has about 3,750 families and 1,400 volunteers signed up to participate in the program nationwide. Project EverGreen matches registered military families with local volunteers to provide free snow removal services. Volunteers who want to join the cause can sign up online by visiting SnowCare for Troops at projectevergreen.org/programs/scft/. In addition to volunteer participation, donations of money or gas cards as well as loans of snow removal equipment to volunteers and community groups are also welcome.

“We’re very grateful for the generous underwriting support our friends at BOSS Snowplow have given to help ensure military families are taken care of,” said Cindy Code, Project EverGreen executive director. “It’s easy to take all of the everyday things like snow shoveling for granted, but when these tasks and other household chores fall to the family member left behind during a deployment the added stress takes a toll. Through SnowCare for Troops and our dedicated volunteer network that’s one small burden lifted from their shoulders.”

Project EverGreen is a national nonprofit organization committed to informing the public about the positive effects of well-maintained green spaces, including lawns and landscapes, sports turf, golf courses, trees and parks. Its SnowCare for Troops program is modeled after its wildly successful sister program, GreenCare for Troops (GCFT). In operation since 2006, GreenCare for Troops provides free lawn and landscape services to military families. In April, 2012 GCFT was recognized by the White House Joining Forces initiative for its service to military families.
