Give Back To The Milford Library

This local gem could benefit from your help.

I'm obsessed with libraries. I'd hang out in one all day if time allowed. So, when I was looking for a place to volunteer as part of Patch's "Give 5" program, the Milford Town Library was a logical (if not selfish) choice.

I spent a couple of hours here Thursday, first going through the microfilm collection and compiling a list of what's missing from the collection. (You can see old Milford Journal, Gazette and Milford Daily News papers on microfilm, some dating back to the 1800s. Very cool.)

I then moved to the home improvement section and shifted some books to make room for new ones. I finished my task without dropping a book on my head. That was a plus.

After my volunteer session, I stopped in to see Sue-Ellen Syzmanski, supervisor of youth services. Syzmanski coordinates volunteer services, and it was she who helped me fill out a CORI application (just to make sure I hadn't ever caused any trouble that would prohibit me from volunteering.)

"We have an active group of about a dozen volunteers, but they come and go," she said. "Primarily, they put return items in order so pages can put them away."

Other volunteer tasks include but are not limited to shelf-reading and cleaning books.

"We accept whatever abilities people have and give them whatever duties match," she said.

Interested in volunteering? Head to see Syzmanski at the library, 80 Spruce St., to fill out an application.
