Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 8

Happy Columbus Day!

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. Today is the observed Columbus Day holiday, which means that federal, state and local offices will be closed, as well as banks.

2. Garbage collections in Milford will go on as scheduled today and this week, despite the holiday.

3. Tuesday is the first day of the public disclosure of new property assessments. The Assessor's office is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. In addition, property owners can view the new values online at www.milford.ma.us, according to a press release.

4. Save the date: Brookside Elementary School will hold its annual yard sale on Oct. 27 from 8 a.m. to noon. All proceeds will go to the positive behavior intervention and support program.

5. A reminder: the voter registration deadline for the Presidential Election is Oct. 17.
