5 Things You Need to Know Today: Aug. 27

The new school year begins Monday for teachers, and Tuesday for all students in Milford schools.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. Milford teachers return to work Monday, for a full day of professional development and a new-school year overview at each of the schools in town.

2. will host a backpack distribution Monday, arranged by donations through the United Way of Tri County, for children who attend the programs. in Marlborough.

3. The Milford High Athletic Boosters rounded up volunteers Sunday to clean up the concession area at athletic complex, to get it ready for the new school year and sports events. Not familiar yet with the athletic boosters? Check out the organization's Facebook page.

4.will host its Fall Classic Golf Tournament on Sept. 24 at Glen Ellen Country Club in Millis. The driving range and a putting green open at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Company sponsors are still being accepted. (See attached PDF for details)

5. Save the Date: the will be Oct. 27 this year. The walk has raised more than $28,000 for the past three years. Half of the proceeds benefit the Salvation Army food program and the area's Meal on Wheels program.
