THINK ABOUT IT! Don't Make Milford a Casino Town

We cannot imagine living in a casino town. It will change the face of Milford forever. All our history, values, and character will be gone.

Dear Members of the Milford Community:

My husband and I have 10 children ages 25 to 6-years of age and we cannot imagine living in a casino town. It will change the face of Milford forever. All our history, values and character will be gone. It will become Milford the Casino Town. Is that the face you want to show?

I’m a lifelong Milfordian. My grandfather was Police Chief William “Fitzy” Fitzpatrick. He worked tirelessly to keep gambling out of Milford. He would go into bars and kick out the gamblers on Friday nights and send them home before they lost their entire paycheck. My aunt was Alice Fitzpatrick, the school nurse, and yes she made house calls. My grandmother was Viola “Vi” Mullaney who worked at the Soda Shoppe on Main Street.

My dad was Gene White who was paralyzed in a car accident. He owned the Porthole Restaurant near the quarries. My mother is Regina White who was a seamstress at Anthony Roberts and than later worked for Milford Regional Hospital. Our family has always attended Saint Mary’s Church. My mom shopped at Alpens. We bought my clothes as Susan’s Children wear and my brothers at Tigers Den. We bought our shoes at Smitty’s and furniture a Stones. We ae pizza at the Sorrento Room. And we all graduated from Milford High School. We had a wonderful life. That’s why I wanted to raise my family here in Milford.

Our bishop, the Most Rev. Robert McManus, along with three other bishops in the Commonwealth, are opposed to the expansion of gambling in Massachusetts. They state in the Catholic Free Press “the gambling industry can threaten local business and change the entire make-up of our communities.” Also “it could diminish our rich heritage and history as a “Commonwealth.” They feel “the gambling legislation opens the door to a new form of predatory gaming which threatens the moral fabric of our society.”
