Restaurants that Closed, or Opened, in 2013

2013 was a year of turbulence for restaurants in Milford. Several longtime establishments closed.

The restaurant business is notoriously difficult. Sixty percent of restaurants that open will close (or change ownership) within three years, according to research data.

In Milford, a good restaurant can quickly establish positive reviews and a loyal following, but even that may not be enough to keep the business going. Several restaurants closed in 2013, including the following:

In March, Crivello's Crossing ended a 75-year run on Depot Street in March. The restaurant and small bar, owned by the family through several generations, was placed on the market in 2012 but the property has not yet sold.

Adirondack Smoke House Deli closed in 2013 after two years of business on South Main Street. The deli and restaurant specialized in smoked meats and cheeses, and drew a loyal following by word of mouth and good reviews. But it closed earlier this year. The space, at 134 S. Main St., remains vacant.

Mango Thai closed in late June, after 10 years in Milford. The sudden closure took many by surprise, as the sign and the contents of the restaurant were removed over a weekend. The owner was said to be interested in another space in town, but as yet, no announcement of a re-opening. This space, too, remains vacant.

Tony's Place closed in early August, four months after the death of its owner, Tony Demir. The tiny restaurant on Main Street was known for its generous portions, fish and chips, and loyal customers.

New Starts in 2013

New restaurants opened up too, promising new variety in Milford, and a favorite restaurant returned.

Yum Yum Froyo, 196 E. Main St.: Milford finally has its own frozen yogurt shop, a trend that seemed to hit everywhere else before arriving here. The shop opened in June at the Quarry Plaza, in a space that used to be H&R Block. Here are some initial reviews.

Beijing Dumpling House opened on Main Street downtown in October. This restaurant moved into a space that previously was a pizza shop, and previously a fine desserts shop. The cuisine is from Northern China, and focuses on noodles and dumplings, made by hand. Here are some initial reviews.

Finally, after closing for a period of time, Napoleon Pizza reopened in July in its existing space on Beach Street, but with a new menu that features roast beef, among other things. People seemed happy to have an old friend back in business.
