Friendly's Files for Bankruptcy, Milford Store to Remain Open

The Friendly's in Milford is not on the list of 63 restaurants expected to close, following an announcement by the company that it is seeking bankruptcy protection.

Judging by the number of cars in the parking lot, the in Milford is popular with locals.

Friendly Ice Cream Corp., the national restaurant chain, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from creditors on Wednesday, the Boston Globe reported, and announced it has closed 63 of its locations across the country.

But Milford will keep its Friendly's, according to the list.

Bankruptcy protection allows a business to restructure its debts. It does not mean a business will close. Friendly's, based in Wilbraham, was founded in 1935 as a neighborhood ice cream shop in Springfield.

Despite the closures, the chain still has more than 400 stores across the U.S.
