Opening Day for Milford Schools

Hugs were all around Tuesday as children returned to school for the 2013-14 year.

From new socks, to sneakers to the new backpack, Damien Torres was ready for the first day of first grade.

He came into Memorial Elementary School Tuesday, holding the hand of his mother. He was excited for the last week, she said.

"For the last week, he couldn't leave me alone," said Stephanie Sanchez.

Damien and all other students in the first through 12th grades returned to classes Tuesday. Kindergarteners will begin later.

At the cross walk on School Street, crossing guard Suzanne Banderet was double-tasking, stopping cars and greeting returning students. She's worked outside Memorial Elementary for the past five years, and longer in Milford.

"I've gone from watching kids walk by me to watching kids drive by me," she said.
