A snowstorm forecasted to start Tuesday night is shaping up to be a bit more than just an inch or two across the western suburbs of Boston and Southeast Massachusetts.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning Monday afternoon for a 24-hour period from 1 p.m. Tuesday through 1 p.m. on Wednesday. The warning was issued at 3:57 p.m. on Monday.

The so-called “jackpot” area will still be on Cape Cod, but heavy snow with accumulations of 5-8 inches are now expected across much of Southeastern Massachusetts from Tuesday into Wednesday, according to WHDH Weather.

"Heavy snow is likely across much of Southern New England with blizzard conditions possible across far Southeastern Massachusetts Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning," the National Weather Service said in its warning Monday. "Snow covered roadways will cause difficult driving conditions. Periods of moderate to heavy snow along with gusty winds will cause visibilities at a mile or less.”

The wind will blow from the north at 10-20 miles per hour with gusts to 35 mph.

In addition to the heavy snow and strong wind, the temperature will be in single digits and the teens.

As has been the case all winter, the snow will have its greatest impact on driving with travel “slow at best on well treated surfaces and quite difficult on any unplowed or untreated surfaces,” according to the weather service.
