5 Things You Need to Know Today: July 9

Shaw's is closing several stores, but the Milford store will remain open.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. Milford Selectmen on Monday appointed Susan Clark, current director of Milford Economic Development office, to the open position of director of the Milford Senior Center. Twenty-four people applied for the position and six were interviewed.

2. Shaw's Supermarket in Milford is not on the list of stores that will be closed by the grocery chain next month. Six stores in Massachusetts and Rhode Island will be shut down in August, according to a report on Boston.com.

3. Milford Selectmen approved Monday a one-day license for Scioli's Pizza Bar that will allow the bar and restaurant to serve alcohol between noon and 9 p.m. on Aug. 31 for the My One Wish Bike Run, a benefit run scheduled to step off and end at the South Main Street business.

4. Milford Selectmen also Monday asked for additional police enforcement of a town ordinance that prohibits people from rooting through trash. Selectman Dino DeBartolomeis said he had had several complaints in recent months, with people rooting through garbage for recyclables.

5. A traffic impact report that analyzes the traffic expected to be generated by the Foxwoods Massachusetts casino project should be available on the town's casino-related website Tuesday, a day before the meeting to discuss the topic at Milford High School.
