5 Things You Need to Know Today: July 15

Four residents of Milford recently helped to raise money for the Franciscan Hospital for Children. And get ready for a five-day heat wave, beginning Monday.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. Milford residents Susan Moschilli, Nicole Crodin, Molly Moschilli and John Moschilli participated last week in the 6th Annual New Balance Heart Break Hill 5K to benefit Franciscan Hospital for Children. Nearly 600 people took part in the event, raising more than $85,000.

2. Beginning today, Milford will be in the grip of a five-day heat wave, with temperatures expected to peak in the mid-90s through Friday. Make sure you stay hydrated and avoid staying in the heat for extended periods. A few weeks ago, a Milford man suffered symptoms of heat exhaustion at Casey Memorial Pool and had to be taken to the hospital.

3. A public meeting will be held Wednesday at Milford High School focusing on the proposed Foxwoods Massachusetts casino and its needs for water and sewer services, and impacts on those utilities. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

4. The Milford Planning Board will meet on Tuesday, and the agenda includes a discussion of concerns about outdoor lighting for the new Crystal Room on Cedar Street, a function hall. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

5. Twinkies disappeared from store shelves several months ago when the old Hostess Brands went into bankruptcy. A new Hostess Brands has emerged, under new owners. Now, Twinkies are coming back. The snack cake should start appearing in local supermarkets beginning Monday, July 15. And it will have a longer shelf life, too.
