13 Ways To Help Your Neighbors During and After the Storm

Elderly neighbors may need an extra helping hand during the Blizzard, which should be winding down later this morning.

The Blizzard of 2103 should be winding down later this morning. No time like today to do a good deed, look out for elderly neighbors and make sure everyone's OK.

Here’s a short list of ways to offer a bit of help to someone who might be in need of some support:

  • Introduce yourself and provide a note which includes your phone number indicating to indicate that you’re available if needed.
  • Clear a walkway. Remove snow from stairs. Older adults are at special risk of falls so any steps at preventing falls is key to remaining independent.
  • Check to see if your neighbor has an operating flashlight or if batteries are needed in the event of a power outage.
  • Bring a sweet treat to share and take the time to visit to help ease social isolation.
  • Deliver a home-cooked meal.
  • Let your neighbor know you’re available in the event of an emergency.
  • Offer the use of your cell phone if the phone lines go “dead.”
  • Take out the dog.
  • Spread some ice melt. Leave a can of ice melt and a scoop at the door.
  • Clear off a car.
  • Ask if they anticipate needing a prescription pickup in the next day or two.
  • Check that outdoor lights such as porch lights and entry door lights are working.
  • Clear the snow off of a house number so that emergency personnel can quickly verify a house location in the event of an emergency.

Even if you don't know your neighbor by name, chances are he or she would welcome your friendly “check in” and assistance.
