Woodland Elementary Receives Grant
Milford’s Woodland Elementary School was a recent recipient of the ASAP (Active Schools Acceleration Project) Grant. The grant emerged from a key priority area identified by Child Obesity 180 to bring quality physical activity to our schools. As a grant recipient - one of just a thousand across the country- our schools are ensuring that students become more physically active throughout their day.
The grant, written by Judy Dagnese RN, Director of Nursing for Milford Public Schools, was co-sponsored by The Milford Community Use Program under the direction of Len Morcone.
Third and fourth graders at Woodland Elementary School recently participated in a 6-week before school program instructed by physical education teacher, Dan Ohannesian. Students were involved in an innovative fitness program through aerobic and team building activities followed by a healthy breakfast provided by Milford Food Services Program. Studies have shown that there is a positive correlation between exercise and academic performance, and the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) recommends a minimum of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per day.
