Higher Education Planning at Milford Town Library

State Sen. Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) has organized a college financial aid information session for parents and students faced with the daunting task of paying for higher education. Sen. Moore will host an informational session on Monday, October 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Milford Public Library in the Granite Room. Joining Sen. Moore will be representatives from the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA), the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation, American Student Assistance (ASA), and a local licensed financial planner.

"There are many parents, grandparents and guardians who want to give their children an opportunity to continue their education beyond their high school years, but they are not sure how they will afford it or where to turn for assistance," said Sen. Moore. "This informational session is designed to provide them with resources on how to navigate through the process and different funding sources."

Sen. Moore added that he hopes that residents will take advantage of this program which he said came about after a constituent read an op-ed he wrote on the topic of higher education. "I find it rewarding when constituents can read one of my op-eds and get something beneficial from it; or have it get them thinking and offer opinions or ideas."

The Senator’s commentary, entitled “Making college affordable for the middle class” can be accessed on his website at www.senatormoore.com.

Participants in Senator Moore's “Planning for Higher Education” program will include some experts in the field. Among them, a representative from the Massachusetts Educational Finance Authority (MEFA), a not-for-profit, self-financing, state authority serving students and families in Massachusetts, and out-of-state students pursuing higher education in Massachusetts. MEFA is not reliant on state or federal appropriations. It was created at the request of Massachusetts colleges and universities to help families plan, save and pay for college and offers community education programs, college savings plans and low-cost financing options.

Also on the agenda will be a representative from the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation, an affiliate of the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce which supports work and learning activities, including school-to-career programs, grant-making and workforce development support; and is focused on the development of meaningful school-business partnerships.

Additionally, joining the Senator will be a representative from American Student Assistance (ASA). ASA is a private nonprofit with a mission to empower students and alumni to successfully manage and repay their college loan debt through student loan education and financial competencies. Rounding out the program will be a local licensed financial planner and a question and answer period.

This program is open to parents, guardians and students. The Milford Public Library is located at 80 Spruce St. in Milford. Parking is available in the library parking lot or street side. For more information, constituents can call Sen. Moore's office at 617-722-1420.
