Memorial Ride, BBQ For Matthew Denice Raises $6K for Scholarships

Here are five things to know to help inform your day.

1. The third annual Matthew Denice Memorial Scholarship Ride and BBQ, held last weekend in Uxbridge at the VFW, raised about $6,000 for the scholarship for Milford High School students to attend Framingham State University, said Michael Denice. The scholarships are awarded in the spring to two graduating seniors planning to study at FSU, Denice's alma mater.

2. A slight change in the announcement for the upcoming town-sponsored, free Flu Shot Clinics. The clinics begin 11 a.m. to noon, Friday, Oct. 4 at the town's Birmingham Apartments. A week later, on Friday, Oct. 11, the shots will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Milford Senior Center. And on Monday, Oct. 21, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Milford Senior Center.

3. Freeloader with fur: Hubcap, a cat who recently found a home through BayPath Humane Society in Hopkinton, had a tale of adventure that ended in Milford. He was found by two men on their way to the Lowe's in Milford who pulled the truck over when they heard meowing. Inside a spare tire on the work truck, they found a friendly cat. (now you know why the name) Turns out, a microchip revealed he'd been reported missing from a Belchertown home four years prior. His original owner didn't want him back, according to a blog posted by the Humane Society, but his nice personality found him a home soon anyway.

4. The Milford Community School Use Program is taking reservations now for Itty Biddy and Biddy Basketball. The deadline is Oct. 18.

5. Casino-Free Milford announced on Thursday that reservations at Truffles for its fundraiser Oct. 3 are filling up fast. The restaurant will donate 20 percent of the food and beverage sales from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 3 to the anti-casino effort. Reservations are recommended.
