About this column:

In this occasional column, we will pose a question to Milford Patch readers.
If there is one thing that Milford has a lot of, it's pizza. Everyone has a favorite place. Maybe two. Please vote in our poll by choosing just one, and explain what it has that the others don't.
This may be among the most depressing "where are you" moments, but it's helpful to know where you stand. With all the talk of the "1 percent," and the "99 percent," one has to wonder: What am I? What is my percent? Am I among the top earners in the country? The much-criticized 1 percent? Or am I among the lowest percentiles? The New York Times analyzed income data for each region of the country to provide readers with a snapshot of their percentage. Are you among the top 25 percent in Boston? Are you among the bottom 50 percent? Enter your salary and see where you stand, then let us know (…
At the risk of sounding pessimistic: is it really getting better out there? For six straight months, the U.S. has added at least 100,000 jobs a month, reducing the national unemployment rate to 8.5 percent. In December, the job gains came across several categories: retail, manufacturing, mining and hospitality. At the beginning of 2011, the unemployment rate was 9.1 percent. If you are unemployed, in the Milford area, are you seeing signs that more jobs are available? Or is the national trend not happening here?
The smell hits you as soon as you walk inside, and at some of these places, before you even enter. Choose your favorite bakery from the list below, and tell us what draws you in.
Small businesses survive by creating a niche and selling what their customers can't find in bigger stores. The ones that thrive have people behind the counter who can help you, direct you to things you might have overlooked. What is your favorite, small shop in Milford for unique gifts?
The state Legislature is expected to give a final approval Wednesday to a casino bill, before sending it to Gov. Deval Patrick for his signature. The bill produced by a conference committee received preliminary approval late Tuesday in both the state Senate and House of Representatives. If authorized by Patrick, it will allow up to three resort style casinos in Massachusetts, and one slots parlor, including one for the region between Worcester and Boston. A developer, David Nunes, has already stated he plans to apply for a license for a casino in Milford, on acreage to the east of Interstate …
The small grocery stores, owned by families, that sell everything from beer and wine to homemade cookies and sandwiches, are some of the nicest things about Milford. Not many towns have them anymore. Which is your favorite? And if we forgot one, please let us know by giving it a shout-out in the comments.
Pick your choice for the scariest intersection in town, and tell us why in the comments.
The National Weather Service is forecasting a chance of snow Thursday, an earlier turn toward winter than many had expected. The forecast is for rain Thursday before midnight, then possibly turning to snow overnight. Between a quarter-inch and a half-inch is possible, not much. Saturday brings another prospect of snow. What do you think of snow in October? Vote in the poll and then tell us in the comments.
Updated: This post has invited some amusing responses. On Facebook, a few of our readers admitted they hadn't even noticed the dinosaur. Others remember it well from childhood. Someone wanted to know what happened to the big red shoe. That might be a subject for another post. The owner of Accurate Auto Care told us the property used to be a gas station. At one point, it was operated by Sinclair, a Utah-based corporation that featured a green brontosaurus as its mascot. Some of the gas stations started featuring these model dinosaurs, back in the 1960s. Many have disappeared from the landscape…
UPDATED: A reader submitted this photo on Thursday. It shows a bathtub in Milford, filled with what was coming out of the water spigot about 8 p.m. When we called last night, the Milford Water Company answering service said it should be cleared up by midnight. On Friday, David Condrey, manager of the Milford Water Company, explained that road construction on Water Street required the company to shut down a water main in that area, to allow workers to install a sewer line. Once the water main was rebooted, this is what resulted. Any sediment that stopped in the pipe got flushed out. Condrey …
The former Gibbs gas station, built in 1968, has looked like this for awhile. The last proposal to do something with this site, according to town officials, was for a donut store with a drive-thru, an idea that didn't work. If you could, what would you put on this property? Tell us in the comments.
