Tony Mobilia is one of the many players on the 12-year-old Milford AAU team that will be heading to Cooperstown, NY, on Friday for at least six games against different teams from around the country. Right fielder Matt Gerard put together quite a season for the Milford Legion Post 59 baseball team. Gerard led the team in hits with 37 over a 22-game regular season, the most during a Milford Legion season since 2004. Dan Mantoni is Post 59’s starting shortstop and is proving he belongs in that role this year as he enters his second season under head coach Brian Macchi. Mantoni, who played in a limited role last season, is taking advantage of his opportunity this season by hitting .500 (11-for-22) in eight games this year (as of 6/30/11), helping the team jump out to a 9-3 start. Jarrod Casey is a senior pitcher and outfielder for the Milford Legion Baseball Post 59 team and has been a key contributor to the team’s early success this summer. Casey has been pitching well this season in both of his starts, going 2-0 with a 5.23 ERA over 10 1/3 innings of work. Caroline Atkinson is a senior tri-captain for the Milford High School varsity softball team this season and has been a member of the team all four of her high school years. The Hawks first baseman has been a big threat to opposing pitchers this season, as she is the fourth leading hitter (batting average) in the Mid-Wach A League, batting at a .488 clip. Name, Age: Alex Boudreau, 18 Class Year: 2011 Sport, Position: Lacrosse, Long-stick Middie Why’s Alex Boudreau the Patch Player of the Week? Alex Boudreau is a senior tri-captain as well as an integral part of head coach Dave Dague’s varsity boys’ lacrosse team. Boudreau has been a part of the lacrosse program since he was a youth, beginning in 2006, and has played a key role in helping the Scarlet Hawks reach the playoffs for the first time in their three-year history. Milford High School senior and athlete, Andrew Baranauskas, threw his first no-hitter of his career last Tuesday against Mid-Wach A opponent Fitchburg. Baranauskas struck out nine batters and scattered just three walks on his way to tossing a gem, and improved the Scarlet Hawks’ record to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in league play. “It was really exciting,” Baranauskas said. “I tried not thinking about it the entire game. Name: Shannon Smith Class Year: 2013 Position, Sport: Pitcher/First base, Softball Why is Shannon Smith the Patch Player of the Week? Shannon Smith is a sophomore starting pitcher for the Milford Scarlett Hawks’ varsity softball team and has helped the team get out to a solid 5-0 start (as of April 26). In one of the Hawks’ most recent games, Smith tossed a no-hitter against Leominster on April 22. Name: Samantha Salamone Class Year: 2012 Sport, Position: Lacrosse, Mid-fielder Why’s Samantha Salamone the Patch Player of the Week? Samantha Salamone is a junior standout lacrosse player for the Milford Scarlet Hawks’ varsity team and has started strong so far this season. Salamone scored four goals and had four assists Tuesday in her most recent game against Mid-Wach A opponent Leominster. Salamone helped the Hawks cruise past the Blue Devils, 19-4, and improve their record to 3-0 in the Mid-Wach in the young season. Name, Age: Blake Hill, 12 Class Year: Sixth grade Sport, Position: Basketball, Center Why is Blake Hill the Patch Player of the Week? Hill is a talented three-sport athlete, as well as a polite and respectful young man. He stays active year-round by playing basketball, football and baseball, but admits that, so far, football is his favorite sport. Just last weekend, Hill, a center for the Milford Hawks’ sixth grade travel team, played in the Cape Cod Tournament. Ben Tuttle is one of the few 6th graders that is dedicated, hardworking and has a "don’t mess around" attitude when it comes to sports.
