Juicing It: Day One [Video]

Inspired by the documentary "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead," — and pretty much feeling fat, sick and nearly dead — I embarked on a 10-day juice fast starting on Monday, Feb. 11.

That means I am having nothing but water, and anything we can juice with our juicer.

The documentary centers around an Australian guy who is sick of himself. He's successful, but has lived years of gluttony, which as taken its toll. He heads to America to fast for 60 days, with a crew filming his journey. His success, and the people he touches, are an inspiration. So much so that my partner and I bought a juicer off of Amazon within minutes of the documentary ending.

We did our research, but as with anything, there were sites and blogs that would suggest this is the best thing one could do for his or her body, and then others who said it is a stupid gimmick. Some said it made them downright sick.

We opted to believe the people who wrote that they had never felt better and lost a ton of weight.

On day one, my recipes consisted of celery, tangelo, kale and carrot for breakfast; kale, carrot, cucumber, celery, beets, chia seeds for lunch; and tomato, kale, parsley, garlic and carrots for dinner.

I must say, none of these recipes should go in the "Yummiest Juice Recipes of All Time" book. They were tolerable, but we're struggling with ratios, and knowing what fruits and veggies will complement one another.

I'll be sharing tips, experiences, and and downs with this 10-day fast. Watch the video for day one.

We'd love to have your comments.

Your assertion that your concoction wasn't bad...not so believable. :-)

All of the juicing I've done has been carrot-based...never tried kale or greens....

My understanding is you need to drink it right then, right? Doesn't do much good popping it in the fridge as it spoils easily.

Try this: 4 stalks of celery, 4-6 kale leaves, 2 apples, 1 whole lemon (if your apples are tart and not sweet, use half) 1 cucumber and 1 inch chunk of ginger.

Yeah, you are supposed to eat it pretty quickly. That's why it makes it pretty hard for Maura, who takes hers to work. She buzzes it with a mixer thingie, though. Judea - thanks for the recipe. I shall try it.

Well I hope that things have gotten MUCH better. I added a link to your FB page to the vegan place called Garden Grill that I visit. They have their juice menu....maybe you will get inspired to try some others. Enjoy!!

Just read your comment above mine. The juices that I typically get at that restaurant are ones that you can sip and enjoy. They really are tasty and not hard to push back. =).
