Etiquette in business e-mail is as standard as in other business correspondence. So, one does not wriite in all caps as that shows anger and/or shouting. Is there any reason for writers to The Patch to ignore basic civilities?
A nom d' plume in publishing throughout history is a device which had very real protections for the author. Political pamphleteering could lead to a death sentence in 18th century Europe and in the colonies it could lead if not to death at least to imprisonment. In modern times, we have nom d' plumes for commercial reasons. Stephen King's "Richard Bachman" is entirely a marketing strategy. But, in other parts of the world, one can still be sentenced to a jihadist death sentence, sort of like an omerta death in criminal organizations. Otherwise, there are few valid reasons for a nom d' plume. So, why does anyone use that device on the internet? More pointedly, why is there a need to mask one's self on The Patch?
The Milford Daily News will not print a letter or publish an article from an unknown. One cannot write a blog article in that capacity. So, why can anyone write a reply as a masked person? The only reason is cowardice. Why reply as a masked thought pirate? Is the writer a coward? Is that person a criminal of some kind? Would we recognize the writer as some how unstable or venal if a real identity was used? Posssibly so. I have challenged several masked men, most notably the widly egotistical Mr. Milford, to an intellectual or a physical duel in person. He is a coward and has kept his anonymity. The Scarlet Hawk has been flushed out and will not dare show his/her tainted face or scribblings for all to see. I have used humourous handles as an e-mail address. I would not use that handle as an author of a blog page or for any other meaningful essay.
Other sites have been successfully sued for harboring repliers like those above. I know that it is a difficult task to monitor all the crazies out there. But , fundamental civilty and intellectual honesty militates against nom d plumes. As a blogger with some thing to say, no matter how unpopular that may be, I and no other blogger should be submitted to masked retorts just as we should not be submitted to masked bigots in person.

First, the fact that you state in your own blog that you've challenged many to "a physical duel in person" should give you enough reason why people might be hesitant to give you their names. Seriously. Far too much anger in you Carl.

Interesting points Carl. We've had a slew of noxious bloggers on the Patch- some sound like they need professional help (in non PC they are nuts). Real names should be required and I think the level of the comments will 'reside' with that person. Another point is that 'instant' replies are not always better and a few moments spent thinking and measuring a response would be a big help. People who accuse others of racism, sexism and all the other 'isms' should stand by their remarks with their names. Good blog Carl.

I have many reasons for not using my name, none of them is cowardice. The primary reason is that my name is none of your business until I decide it is. I doubt that insults, bullying or challenges from a blogger will sway that position much.
I am a private person. I don’t introduce myself to people on the street or at Dunkin Donuts, even if we chat for a moment. I don’t introduce myself to the guy next to me at a Red Sox game or at a fireworks display, even if I have an opinion to share.
My name is mine and I’ll share it when and with whom I please.

Well said Ugly Hat. Also carl your quote ". I have challenged several masked men, most notably the widly egotistical Mr. Milford, to an intellectual or a physical duel in person. He is a coward and has kept his anonymity." makes YOU sound like a bully.
Just because you don't agree with things that people say (no matter what name they go by) doesn't give you the right to point out one person. You call Mr Milford "wildly egotistical". I think your the one that is wildly egotistical. You going to make fun of me now that I said something you disagree with? Your ridiculous. You sound like the blog police. Put your badge away. Noone cares.

If a forum is set up where you have to use your real name, then those are the rules. If you don't/can't use your real name, then you don't get to participate. If you go onto a forum that allows aliases, then it is different. Your expectations in each respective forum will certainly be different.
I have used my real name here and in other forums. I have never used an alias. I respect those that feel the need to use an alias until they start attacking people for their beliefs. Then I consider it cowardice. If they are normally conversing, then that is OK.

I agree with Joe too that if Patch allows anonymous posters, then readers beware. With that being said I have to admit that before the elections I pretty much stopped reading the Patch because of all the nasty, ridiculous comments posted by anonymous posters. I think it is true that people would be more civil and less likely to post unsubstanciated facts if they publicly had to defend the integrity of their comments. I also believe too that sometimes people have to be anonymous if they are an inside whistle blower. Still, I think most of the anonymous postings on the Patch are of the blowhard variety.

In all fairness to everyone, real and false named, that election brought out the trolls on both sides of the fence when it came down to commentary.

"I have challenged several masked men, most notably the widly egotistical Mr. Milford, to an intellectual or a physical duel in person. He is a coward and has kept his anonymity."
Carl, please explain exactly what this sentence means. Are you claiming you have sent me a challenge in the past? If so, show it, linked to it. Do you mean this blog post is that challenge? Please define exactly what you mean by "physical duel in person." I want to know exactly what it is you are threatening me with. Please be very clear. Pretend I am as stupid as you like to think I am, and clarify what you are saying.

Typical Carl in wind bag fashion. The original Milford Coward dressing up in his Napolean garb. Now he is or isn't or has or hasn't challenged you to a physical fight (deftly described as duel). The best comedy is always the unintentional type.

Mr. Berke again trying his best to hide his anger and many other shortcomings through his pseudo-intellectualism. The man has and always will be the biggest coward of all. Bullying women and children is always the best way to make sure everyone knows how superior a human being right?
