Crosswalks and Sidewalks: Use Them, Please

Who are these people walking down the middle of the street, eschewing sidewalks, and glaring at passing motorists?

And what are they doing walking against traffic? Why risk life and limb? What is the meaning of usurpation of the motorized roadway? Are these the same folks walking out of stores in a strip mall, and immediately walking down the middle of any of the roads on an extremely oblique angle for their car?

Do they have an immediate goal of any kind? Isn't the immediate goal to reach the other side of the road safely and as quickly as possible? Like, what are the crosswalks for? A hint of what should not be done?

It could be these are the same morons that cannot enter/exit doors. But, my guess is that these are three different cognitive dissonances and should be treated by different drugs or lobotomies.

I have to admit, I'm one of those types that doesn't necessarily cross in the crosswalk. I did a diagonal the other day, in front of the police station, and a woman yelled at me for it. Otherwise, I'd have thought it might be you, Carl!

You’re a pretty happy guy, huh Carl?

I hardly think crossing the street outside the lines of a crosswalk is risking life and limb. Cars have steering wheels and brakes and most of the time they have fairly capable drivers. With a little common sense, we'll all be okay.

Though it may annoy you, I don’t think people are morons just because of this behavior.

You are accusing me of what? I am happy, so happy that I can observe and comment and write about these things. For some, ignorance is bliss. I am not blissful. And morons are epidemic. They used to be called yahoos but thety are always with us and in always greater numbers, unfortunately.

In Carl's defense, yes, they are morons. It's a simple matter of natural selection. If you walk out into traffic expecting a two ton machine to stop on a dime for little ol' you, you've got a major gap of knowledge in the field of physics, or an ego big enough to compensate. In case you haven't been following along, Milford has a big problem with illegal immigrants (especially drunk immigrants) driving without licenses. Would you consider them "capable drivers"? I certainly would not. Laws exist for a reason. In this case, it's to protect morons from walking out into traffic and causing an accident, either by being run over or by causing the driver to unexpectedly slam on the brakes or swerve to avoid the aforementioned moron. Why is this difficult for you to understand?

Carl - I wasn’t accusing you of anything. I am a fiscal conservative who believes our federal government should be smaller and less powerful. And I occasionally cross the street without using a crosswalk. If these traits of mine are all it takes for you to decide I should seek medical treatment or be lobotomized, it is my opinion that you are probably not much fun to be around.

hht1975 - Perhaps I’m missing something but I just don’t see this as a critical issue in our area. When someone steps off the sidewalk (crosswalk or not), I either stop to let them cross or steer my 2 ton weapon around them. It’s not that difficult. If you can’t stop or steer your vehicle for a pedestrian, how are you going to deal with a child chasing a puppy? Slow down!

Something I find funny is the different attitudes we tend to assume when we are driving and when we're walking. The same people who are quite aggressive and impatient behind the wheel, suddenly demand the utmost respect and sympathy when they are crossing the street anywhere--the pedestrian always has the right of way, unless YOU're driving. I agree with UglyHat's general take, though I draw the line at his superficial invocation of the "big government" demon. In a democracy, the government is as big as the governed. We ARE the government, and we're quite big now, as we must and should be, and as we should be proud to be.

Uglyhat, it depends where you live. I live at an intersection near downtown. I see people walk out into traffic ALL OF THE TIME with their headphones on without any regard for the cars. It is a huge problem. I see an accident on my corner about once every couple of weeks and it doesn't help when people (usually teenagers) walk out into traffic completely oblivious to their surroundings because they're wearing headphones or yapping on the phone. I'm perfectly capable of steering my vehicle out of the way, however sometimes there are cars coming from the other way or parked vehicles on the side of the road which leave the driver three choices about what to hit--oncoming traffic, parked car or pedestrian? Why do I have to risk my life and property and potentially other's property because somebody decides that the laws don't apply to them? Again, it's a law that's there for a good reason. Just because you don't think it's a problem, doesn't mean that the law should be ignored. I don't personally think Milford has a huge problem with Crystal Meth, but I don't think that the laws regarding it should be overlooked, do you? We can't cherry pick which laws we follow or enforce, it doesn't work that way.

I understand the problem perfectly – you have a bunch of young people that think they’re invincible showing their power by breaking traffic laws and annoying people. And apparently, they’re very good at it. This has been going on for a long time. It’s just kids being kids.

I agree that laws have meaning and should be obeyed. And I agree that it’s dangerous when laws are not obeyed. My disagreement comes at the point where Carl suggests these people are morons that should be drugged, or when you suggest this is a huge problem akin to Illegal Immigration or drug addiction.

Addiction ruins the lives of millions of people. Illegal immigration costs Americans their jobs, causes problems in schools, hospitals and restaurants. Kids crossing the street with headphones on annoy a few people a day.

moron=no

But I have to say it annoy the goodness out of me, when I'm driving down Main St. and randomly people pop out between cars and cross the road without even looking, and then GLARE at you. Having brakes, and steering wheels is great, but it is risking life and limb if you step out in front of a car without looking and the person driving it can't stop in time...I was wondering just the other day if parents teach "stop, look both ways" anymore, when I saw a gaggle of kids randomly decide to cross the road in front of a car almost causing a five car accident....I don't care if you use the crosswalk or cross diagonally, but at least be AWARE of the cars in your vicinity!

A vehicle is not a weapon and in my area there are NO sidewalks and NO cross walks to speak of and I do a lot of walking and i was taught to walk agaInst the traffic as to see what's coming AT you..( and served me well on several occasions)..not with you and risk being hit from behind by these cell phone addicts that can't drive without phoning or texting....Two sides to every story..and also, what's the speed limit on Main St?

Thespeed limit as defined in the manual is determined by the distance between buildings, Less tat 100 fett it is 20 mph unless otherwise posted. So in downriown it should be 20mph. Not even the cops obey this one.

P/S/ maybe we ALL should just slow down? What's the hurry? You catch traffic at the next light anyway..Always amazed me..

FYI - You're suppose to WALK against traffic and bike ride with traffic. I for one have crossed without a crosswalk because the crosswalk is too far out of the way from where I am sometimes but I wait for the break in traffic or hope that some motorist will stop for me because they want too. I agree the kids are ridiculous for just crossing the street where ever. My oldest child was like that as a teenager and he would say that we could sue the driver and I would say back to him that "I wouldn't sue the driver because you're stupid - that's not their fault"

On the flip side - Drivers NEED to slow down to the speed limit so they have time to stop for stupid people who walk out behind parked cars without looking. Insurance companies don't care if the fault is the pedestrian - You hit them - you're fault - no questions. A few years ago a woman got hit crossing in front of the Milford Performing Arts Center by an older gentleman and as far as I was concerned it was her fault because she walked out in front of him right where the road curves - No way he could see her but you knew that he got bagged for by his insurance company

Thanks for all the interest. One more thing, not mentioned by anyone. The type of behaviors that most describe here are fineable offenses. It is called "jaywalking" and to complain about jaywalkers is only calling attention to a series of laws designed for safety. See page 120 of the Driver's Manual. Like most laws regarding traffic few are enforced. So it is left to us to be alert and yes, crabby.

If there is a crosswalk use it, but use commonsense and look before stepping out to make sure traffic stops. If you choose not to walk the few extra feet to the nearest crosswalk then you are fare game. If someone is in the crosswalk, then both sides must stop.

On a similar topic, if your walking on the trail, don't want 3 or 4 abreast or down the middle of the trail.

Good point, mike ..as we've walked the trail now for along time we've met new friends and tend to stop and chat but we are aware that we should stayto the right,,,,as there are cyclists and joggers etc..

Call me a menace to society, but if you look both ways and it is safe, I don't have a problem with jaywalking. That said, I've had several experiences driving down Main St. where people just walk into the street and seem surprised to see a car coming at them. And if they happen to be looking at their phone while it happens that is just natural selection in action.
