What's Going on at Cedar and East Main Streets?

What is going on at the former Gibbs gas station property?

The old gas station at Cedar and East Main streets is long gone, but the damage left by the leaking tanks remains.

And that's why heavy equipment is now on the site. A contractor is removing the diesel fuel-contaminated soil, and replacing it with clean soil.

The contaminated material, covered with a white tarp, will be taken away when the job is done.

The property is the former Gibbs gas station, whose owner this year agreed to pay a $200,000 fine for failing to report the leak of diesel fuel on the site.

The gas station has been closed for several years. Earlier this year, one of the Gibbs buildings was torn down.

I wish Gasco would buy it and re-open their gas station. They were always the best price in town.
